GEORGETOWN,
DE - Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington,
DE/Concord - right ) led off his
second-straight game with a solo home run
and Bryan Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset)
knocked in three runs and collected three
hits, including a two-run home run, as the
University of Delaware baseball team,
swept a three-game series with the
University of Massachusetts on Sunday
afternoon with a 13-1 victory at Delaware
Technical Community College.
Scott
Rambo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) (2-1)
took the win for the Hens (5-4), who won
their fourth consecutive game by allowing
only two hits while striking out five in
five scoreless innings on the mound.
Jeremy Demers suffered the loss for the
Minutemen (1-5) allowing five runs on
eight hits and walking two in four
innings.
Delaware
picked up where they left off offensively
from game two of the series by banging out
18 hits with three doubles and three home
runs. Menchaca once again led the charge
batting 2-for-3 with a run scored and a
home run. Hagerich blasted a two run shot
in the sixth inning and batted 3-for-4
with a run scored and a double, while Dan
Kozek (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tallied the
Hens remaining home run with a solo shot
in the fifth.
Every
Delaware batter aside from Brent Rogers
(Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant), who was
walked in all four at bats and Mike
Clifford (Rising Sun, MD/West Nottingham
Academy) recorded a hit in the contest,
six tallied multiple hits. Among the
multiple hitters was Ryan Graham
(Danville, IL/Danville), who batted
2-for-2 with two RBI and Brian Valichka
(Frederick, MD/Urbana), who recorded two
doubles. Despite the offense, the Hens
left 19 runners on base and left three
stranded with the bases loaded on four
occasions during the contest.
The
Delaware pitching staff held Massachusetts
scoreless into the ninth until they
allowed one unearned run when Bryan
Adamski reached on an error by Brock
Donovan (New Castle, DE/William Penn) and
scored on a sacrifice hit by Curt Szado.
The Hens allowed only four hits while
walking five and striking out 11 in nine
frames.
Derrick
Durepo had the Minutemen's only multi-hit
game batting 2-for-4 while Bryan Garrity
and Dan Coury each added a hit.
"It was a
very satisfying weekend with the hitting
and the pitching," said Head Coach Jim
Sherman, "We were fortunate to use
Delaware Tech's facilities because
otherwise the games may not have gotten
in."
The Hens
will travel to Rider University for their
next game on Wednesday, March 9 at 3
p.m.
