Grand Slams UNC Wilmington Past Delaware
Baseball, 7-6 in
Series-Opener
WILMINGTON,
NC (April 15, 2005)-- Freshman Dan
Richardson (Bear, DE/Caravel) sent a
three-run round-tripper to left field in
the top of the fourth for the lead but UNC
Wilmington's Daniel Hargrave had the last
word in the bottom of the inning, as the
rightfielder sent a grand slam to
centerfield to led UNC Wilmington past
Delaware baseball, 7-6 on Friday in
Colonial Athletic Association Actionat
Brooks Field.
The
Seahawks (25-12, 10-0 CAA) nearly let a
7-4 lead slip away as Delaware (13-7, 3-4
CAA) put together two consecutive
unanswered single-run innings. Adam
Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertwon Area)
led off the eighth with his third home run
of the year, a solo shot to left-center,
followed by Todd Davison (Somers Point,
NJ/St. Augustine), who in the ninth led
off with a single down the left field line
granting him a hit in every conference
competition thusfar. Kelly Buber (Yuba
City, CA/Yuba Community) grounded into a
fielder's choice on the following play and
was replaced on the bag by Brent Rogers
(Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant), who advanced
to second on a passed ball and scored when
Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana)
singled down the left field line.
The
Hens loaded the bases with one out as
Tsakonas was hit by a pitch and Bryan
Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset) singled
but it was to no avail as Brandon Menchaca
(Wilmington, DE/Concord) and Richardson
struck out to end the game.
Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) (3-3) took
the loss for Delaware allowing all seven
of the Seahawk runs on seven hits during
six innings of work. He was replaced by
Billy Harris (Bear, DE/Salesanium) who
pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless and
hitless relief. Ronald Hill (7-3) picked
up the win for UNC Wilmington after
allowing four runs on eight hits in seven
innings pitched.
Richardson
led the Hens offensively by hitting a
triple away from the cycle as Hagerich
extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Menchaca and Valichka each had multi-hit
games as Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Triton)
rounded out Delaware's 13 hits with a
single.
UNC
Wilmington was led by Hargrave and Chris
Hatcher who combined for five RBI from
home runs John Raynor was the only Seahawk
aside from Hatcher to have a multi-hit
game.
The
Seahawks took an early 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the first when catcher Chris
Hatcher belted a leadoff home run over the
left field fence but the Blue Hens tied
the game at 1-1 in the top of the second
when Valichka scored on a Richardson
double.
The
teams continue the three-game set on
Saturday at 4 p.m. at Brooks
Field.
