UNC Wilmington Uses 17 Hits And Two Home Runs By Matt Poulk To Cruise By Delaware Baseball, 16-6

WILMINGTON, NC (April 15, 2005)-- UNC Wilmington used two home runs from Matt Poulk and five homers on 17 hits overall to defeat the University of Delaware baseball team, 16-6 on Saturday afternoon at Brooks field.

The Blue Hens (13-18, 3-5 CAA) received run-scoring at bats from Adam Tsakonas (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area-at right), who homered in his second straight game, and Kelly Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba Community), Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Triton), and Brent Rogers (Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant), who each drove in a run in the fourth.

The Seahawks (26-12, 11-0 CAA) remain undefeated in conference play by using three-RBI performances by John Raynor, Mark Carver, and Kenny Smith.

Buber led the Hens with three hits while Graham and Rogers each doubled and added singles to their two-hit performances. Bryan Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset) singled to match the longest hitting streak of the season set by Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord) at 11 games while Davison's single continues his streak of hitting in every conference contest.

Jason Rogers (New Castle, DE/William Penn) (1-3) took the loss for Delaware by allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in 2.1 innings on the mound. Blake Hundley posted his first decision of the season with the Seahawk victory by pitching three innings and allowing one run on two hits while sitting down two.

UNCW put two runs on the board in the first on an RBI single by Raynor and a run-scoring ground out by Poulk. The Seahawks then used two consecutive five-run innings led by the long ball to increase their lead to 12-0. Home runs by Chris Hatcher, Poulk, and Kenny Smith highlighted UNC Wilmington's five-run third inning while Mark Carver shot a deep ball to left in the fourth to round out the Seahawk home runs.

Delaware batted through the lineup in its' four-run fifth inning to cut the deficit to 12-4. Menchaca singled and scored from first on Roger's double to center followed by Graham, who singled home Rogers and moved to third on Davison's single. Buber followed with a run-scoring single to left and Davison scored on a wild pitch to close out the inning.

Poulk's second homer of the day in the sixth inning gave UNCW a 13-4 lead as the Seahawks added three more runs in the seventh to take a commanding 16-4 lead.

The teams continue the three-game set on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Brooks Field.
