Avoids The Sweep By Defeating UNC

WILMINGTON,
NC -- Sophomore lefthanded pitcher Billy
Harris (Bear, DE/Salesanium-at right)
posted the first save of his career as the
University of Delaware baseball team
avoided a three game sweep by defeating
UNC Wilmington, 7-6 Sunday afternoon at
Brooks field.
Delaware
(14-18, 4-5 CAA) has now had 10 or more
hits in seven of their last nine games and
have captured double-digit hit games in 14
contests overall. UNC Wilmington (26-13,
11-1 CAA) was dealt its' first
in-conference loss of the season and saw a
12-game home winning streak snapped with
the defeat.
Freshman
rightfielder Dan Richardson (Bear,
DE/Caravel) batted 3-for-3 with a solo
home run in the second while catcher Brian
Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana) also
scattered three hits with a double and
added a run scored. Adam Tsakonas
(Pottstown, PA/Boyertwon Area) added a
pair of hits and drove in a run and scored
one as Bryan Hagerich (Somerset,
PA/Somerset) claims the longest hitting
streak of the season, which now stands at
12 games, by posting a two RBI double.
Todd Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St.
Augustine) continues his trend of hitting
in each CAA contest by driving in two runs
on a single and is pacing behind Hagerich
with a nine-game hit streak.
Senior
righthanded pitcher Scott Rambo
(Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) claimed his
second win of the week after earning the
20th win of his career on Monday against
New York Tech. Only 23 other pitchers in
Delaware history have passed the 20-win
mark and Rambo is now only two wins away
from tying three other pitchers for ninth
place in all-time career wins. The
co-captain pitched in 5.2 innings and
allowed six runs on seven hits before
being replaced by Harris who struck out
five and allowed only two hits, both to
UNC Wilmington lead-off
batters.
The
Seahawks were paced by John Raynor who
banged out three hits with a double and a
run scored while Michael Marbry added a
pair of hits with an RBI double in the
second and an RBI single in the
sixth.
UNC
Wilmington's Jeff Moore suffered his first
loss of the season by allowing four runs
on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched. The
Seahawks received three solid innings of
scoreless relief from Allen Flood who
allowed two hits and sent five Blue Hens
back to the dugout looking, striking out
five overall.
Delaware
jumped on UNCW early with a three-run
two-out rally in the first inning that
began with Kelly Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba
Community) who singled to right. Valichka
and Tsakonas both singled up the middle
before Hagerich could send them home with
a double to the gap in right-center. The
Blue Hens tacked on another run on
Richardson's solo shot in the top of the
second to increase their lead to 4-0
before the Seahawks could muster a
hit.
UNC
Wilmington put together two runs on three
hits in the bottom of the inning to cut
the lead to 4-2. Raynor had a leadoff
double down the left field line, reached
third on a deep fly by Matt Poulk, and
crossed the plate when Kenny Smith
grounded out to third. Jason Appel
followed with a single to center and
scored from first when Marbry double to
right-center.
Delaware
tacked on three more runs in the top of
the sixth as Dan Kozek (Medford,
NJ/Shawnee) reached on an error and
Richardson singled, sending Kozek to
second. Brent Rogers (Claymont, DE/Mt.
Pleasant) walked to load the bases and
with one out Kozek scored on a passed
ball. Ryan Graham (Danville, IL/Triton)
walked to reload the bases with one out as
Davison singled up the middle to score two
before Buber and Valichka went down
swinging to end the inning and leave two
stranded on the bags.
The
Seahawks rallied back with four runs in
the bottom of the inning but left the
tying run in scoring position as Harris
sent Jonathon Batts down swinging to stunt
the rally.
Delaware
returns to action on Tuesday, April 19
when it faces in-state rival Delaware
State at Bob Hannah Stadium at 3 p.m. in a
rematch of this week's contest in which
the Hornets defeated the Blue Hens, 4-3 in
extra innings.
