Rallies to Down Delaware 4-3 in Weekend
Series Opener
PETERSBURG,
VA (May 19, 2005)- Virginia Commonwealth
shortstop Sergio Miranda proved the
difference maker batting 3-for-4 including
a double and three RBI as the Rams
defeated the University of Delaware
baseball team, 4-3 on Thursday in Colonial
Athletic Association action at the
Petersburg Complex.
The
seesaw battle saw four lead changes as the
Hens (24-29, 11-11 CAA) entered the bottom
of the ninth down 4-3. Brent Rogers
(Claymont, DE/Mt. Pleasant) led off but
popped out to VCU (29-19, 14-8 CAA)
catcher Pete Farina. Ryan Graham
(Danville, IL/Triton) reached first for
the fifth time of the evening with his
third walk. After stealing two bases
already, the speedy Graham went for his
third but was caught at second by Miranda
who scooped up a throw from Farina for the
second out. Todd Davison (Somers Point,
NJ/St. Augustine) flied out to right field
to end the game.
Brock
Donovan (New Castle, DE/William Penn-at
right) made his first plate appearance
since being struck by a car on April 8 as
a pinch hitter in the eighth. Graham and
Davison each singled as Dan Richardson
(Bear, DE/Caravel) was the only Hen to hit
for extra bases with a double and added a
stolen base while scoring two
runs.
Chad
Kerfoot (Owings, MD/Northern) pitched six
innings and allowed two runs on six hits
while striking out five in his first CAA
start. He was replaced by Mitch Heckert
(Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) who
allowed two runs on two hits in two
innings on the mound and falls to 1-2 on
the season.
The
Hens held the dangerous Scott Sizemore to
a single in four trips to the plate as the
entire Ram lineup combined for eight hits
on the night.
Harold
Mozingo took the start and pitched 6.2
innings allowing three runs on three hits
while striking out ten. He was replaced by
Brett Walker who struck out two and walked
two in 2.1 innings of scoreless
relief.
VCU
took the early lead as Miranda led off the
game with a single. Two batters later he
stole second and scored when Farina
blistered a single up the
middle.
Delaware
tied the game back up at 1-1 in the top of
the fifth as Richardson walked, stole
second, and scored on Graham's single to
center field.
The
Rams answered back to reclaim the lead in
the bottom of the inning as Alex Gary was
hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored
when Miranda doubled but was thrown out
trying to take third.
Richardson
led off the Blue Hen seventh with a double
before taking advantage of four straight
walks, three issued by Mozingo and one by
Walker, to take the lead 3-2.
VCU
retaliated with two runs on two hits in
the bottom of the inning on Delaware
reliever Heckert. Harris was hit by a
pitch to lead off the inning followed by
Gary who singled to left. Kwan Evans
sacrificed with a bunt that moved the
runners up one base to allow Miranda the
opportunity to single in both runs for the
game-winner.
The
teams continue their three game set on
Friday, May 20 at 7 p.m. in Petersburg,
VA.
