7-3 Win over Error-Plagued

Commonwealth errors for a 7-3 Colonial
Athletic Association baseball victory
Friday night at the Petersburg Sports
Complex.
The Blue
Hens, who snapped a three-game losing
streak, improved to 25-29 overall and
12-11 in CAA play, assuring a .500 or
better record in conference play. Virginia
Commonwealth, which entered the weekend
series in second place in the league
standings, fell to 29-20 (14-9 CAA). The
two teams will close out the regular
season in the series finale Saturday at 2
p.m. Both Delaware and VCU will compete in
the CAA Tournament next week at
Wilmington, NC.
Delaware,
led from start to finish, scoring three
runs in the third and two more in the
fifth and seventh innings to put the game
away. The Blue Hens banged out 12 hits
while Gaphardt (4-5) and Jason Rogers
limited the Rams to just five hits.
Gaphardt, who threw a no-hitter earlier
this season, went seven innings, allowing
just four hits and striking out seven with
just one walk. Rogers allowed one run and
struck out three in two innings of work.
Tsakonas
went 2 for 4 with two RBI and two stolen
bases, knocking in a run with a third
inning double and a seventh inning single.
The freshman later scored in the seventh
on one of VCU's six errors.
The Hens
scored three runs in the third inning as
Todd Davison, who went 3 for 5 on the
night, opened the scoring with an RBI
single and the Hens made it 2-0 when Brock
Donovan knocked in a run on a groundout.
Tsakonas' RBI double upped the lead to
3-0.
VCU, which
lost for just the ninth time in 27 home
games this season, got on the board with a
single run in the third inning. But the
Hens upped the lead to 4-1 in the top of
the fourth as Dan Richardson doubled and
scored on an RBI single by Brent Rogers.
Kelly Buber followed with a double to left
center to score Rogers and up the lead to
4-1.
The Hens
put the game away in the seventh with two
more runs as Tsakonas knocked in one run
with an RBI single and later scored on an
error. The Rams scored single runs in the
seventh and eighth but could never mount a
serious comeback.
VCU
starter John Leonard (4-4) suffered the
loss, allowing nine hits and six runs -
just two earned - in six innings while
striking out six.
