McGuire Wins Early Pitching Duel With
William & Mary, 7-1; Hens Retrieve
33rd Consecutive 20-Win

(April 29, 2005)-- The University of
Delaware baseball team defeated William
& Mary, 7-1 in Colonial Athletic
Association action on Friday afternoon at
Bob Hannah Stadium.
With
the win the Blue Hens improve to 20-20
(8-5 CAA) and record their 33rd
consecutive 20-win season. William &
Mary falls to 21-21 and drops to 7-12 in
league play.
Mike
McGuire (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley-at right)
captured the victory and improves to 5-3
as the freshman allowed only one run and
issued one walk all afternoon while
striking out 10 in eight innings on the
mound. Joe Kantakevich (1-3) suffered the
loss for the Tribe by allowing two runs on
four hits while striking out six in 6.2
innings pitched.
Todd
Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine)
jacked a three-run homer while Brandon
Menchaca (Wilmington, DE/Concord) drove in
two runs with two hits, including a
double, and added two runs scored. Bryan
Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset) and Dan
Richardson (Wilmington, DE/Concord) added
a pair of hits while Hagerich doubled and
Richardson drove in a run.
Will
Rhymes led the Tribe with a solo home run
to go along with a single while Greg
Sexton tossed in a pair of hits to add to
William & Mary's total nine
hits.
Delaware
hit the board first as Adam Tsakonas
(Pottstown, PA/Boyertown Area) singled and
moved to third on Hagerich's double and
scored on a sacrifice by Menchaca to give
the Hens a 1-0 lead in the bottom on the
second.
Davison's
three-run homer over the wall in
left-center off Tribe reliever Michael
LaFleur highlighted a four run seventh in
which Hagerich and Menchaca combined for
consecutive doubles to score the first run
of the inning.
Rhymes
solo shot in the top of the eighth broke
McGuire's shutout and cut the deficit to
5-1 but the Hens retaliated with two more
runs in the bottom of the inning to
increase their lead to 7-1.
The
teams continue the three-game set
tommorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Bob
Hannah Stadium.
