A Pair Of Four Run Innings And 16 Hits Helps The Tribe Topple Delaware Baseball, 10-6

NEWARK, DE (April 30, 2005)-- The University of Delaware baseball team fell to William & Mary, 10-6 in Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Tribe (22-21, 8-12 CAA) used a pair of four-run innings in the third and the sixth to topple the Blue Hens (20-21, 8-6 CAA) and break their five-game CAA win streak.

In the bottom of the ninth Bryan Hagerich (Somerset, PA/Somerset) led off with a solo home run to open up a late rally. William & Mary reliever Jake Rule walked three straight batters to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate in Kelly Buber (Yuba City, CA/Yuba Community). With the count at 2-2 Rule found the strike zone on an inside curve to send Buber down looking and end the game.

Brian Valichka (Frederick, MD/Urbana) unleashed a towering three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth while Buber, Davison, and Hagerich each added a pair of hits to Delaware's total of nine for the afternoon.

Brent Gaphardt (Bel Air, MD/Dundalk) took the loss and drops to 2-5 as the lefty allowed four runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings on the mound.

Chad Murray drove in five runs on four hits including a double to lead the Tribe followed by Will RHymes who also handed out four hits off the Hens staff. Greg Sexton pounded out three hits, all doubles, and scored two runs while Mike DeCarlo and Kyle Padgett each added a pair of hits to add to William & Mary's total of 16 for the afternoon.

Jeff Dagenhardt captured the victory and improves to 2-3 after allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out seven in eight innings pitched.

The Tribe began to unload on the Hens in the top of the third with four runs on four hits. Sexton led off with a double and Mike DeCarlo singled one batter later. Chris Rahl walked to load the bases and Padgett drove in a run on a single followed by Murray who doubled in three runs one batter later.

In the top of the fifth, Padgett was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Lunardi and finally scored when Murray grounded into a double play with no outs to extend the Tribe lead to 5-0.

William & Mary mounted another four run inning in the top of the sixth as Rhymes and DeCarlo scattered consecutive singles and Rahl was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Padgett drove in two with a double down the left field line and Murray drove in two with a single to the left field line.

Delaware hit the board in the bottom on the inning down 9-0. Kozek led off with a double and scored when Buber sent a single up the middle. The Tribe answered back however with one run in the top of the seventh as DeCarlo sent a sacrifice fly deep to center that scored Sexton who reached on his third double of the afternoon.

The Hens put together a four run inning of their own highlighted by Valichka's three-run home run over the left field fence after Buber singled home Todd Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine) for the first run of the inning.

The teams continue their three-game set on Sunday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
