Hits Grand Slam, Knocks in Five Runs as
Hens Take Series from William & Mary
with 12-6 Win

NEWARK,
DE -- Sophomore left fielder Bryan
Hagerich (right) clouted a grand slam in
the third inning, scored three runs, and
finished with four hits and a career-high
five runs batted in as the University of
Delaware took a Colonial Athletic
Association baseball series from William
& Mary with a 12-6 victory Sunday
afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The
Hens (21-21, 9-6 CAA), who have won six of
their last eight games, remained in third
place in the CAA standings heading into
next weekend's key three-game home set
with fourth place George Mason. Delaware,
which downed William & Mary 7-1 Friday
before falling to the Tribe 10-6 Saturday,
are now 6-1 in their last seven conference
games. The top six teams in the CAA
advance to the conference tournament to be
held May 25-28 in Wilmington,
NC.
William
& Mary fell to 22-22 (8-13 CAA)
despite a big day from second baseman Will
Rhymes, who went three for four with a
double, home run, and two runs batted in.
Five of the Tribe's eight hits went for
extra bases, including three home runs.
Catcher Mike DeCarlo and third baseman
Greg Sexton, who scored three runs and
knocked in two others, hit the other
William & Mary home runs.
Delaware
banged out 12 hits and four home runs and
scored at least one run in all but two
innings, including four-run bursts in both
the third and fifth innings. Senior Scott
Rambo (6-3) got the win on the mound,
going six innings and overcoming seven
walks while striking out five. Delaware
touched William & Mary starter Cory
Forrest (2-4) for six hits and seven runs
in four and one-third innings.
Brandon
Menchaca collected two hits and knocked in
three with a sacrifice fly in the second
inning and a two-run homer in the fifth
inning, his team-high seventh of the year.
Brian Valichka and Adam Tsakonas also hit
back-to-back home runs in the fifth for
the Blue Hens.
The
Tribe got on the board with a first inning
run without the benefit of a hit but the
Hens came back to tie the score at 1-1 in
the second when Hagerich tripled and
scored on Menchaca's sacrifice fly. The
Hens then took the lead for good when
Hagerich hit his seventh home run of the
season to clear the bases in the third.
Delaware's four runs in the fifth upped
the lead to 9-2.
Delaware
returns to non-league action Tuesday when
the Hens travel to UMBC for a 7 p.m. game.
