CONWAY, SC - Coastal Carolina
overcame a 5-1 deficit to overcome Delaware, 11-6 in
baseball, Friday afternoon at Coastal Carolina
University.
Delaware (1-1) trailed 1-0 in the third
when it put three runs on the board. Junior Chris
Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) hit a
three-run double to knock in Vince Vukovich
(Voorhees, NJ/Eastern), Andrew Salvo (South
Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's) and Peter Maestrales
(Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II). All the Delaware
damage was caused with two outs.
Delaware added to the 3-1 lead in the
fourth on a Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) single that knocked in Kris Dufner
(Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge). In the fifth, Delaware
made it 5-1 with a Dufner single that drove in Maestrales.
Coastal Carolina (9-2) closed the gap on
Delaware starter Rich McGuire (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur)
to 5-3 in the bottom half of the fifth as Chanticleer Justin
Owens drove in Brandon Powell on a single to left and Brooks
Marzka scored on a Luke Johnson groundout to second base.
The Chanticleers put up a seven spot in
the bottom of the sixth on relief pitcher Nick
Spiewak (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial). The
rally was highlighted by a Marzka single that drove in Mario
Gianfortune and Adam Keim.
The Chanticleers added one more in the
eighth and Delaware scored one to get closer in the ninth on
a Salvo single that drove in Fahy, but the Chants outdid the
Hens, 11-6.
For Delaware, Kolodzey went 2-4 with a
double on the afternoon while Fahy and Salvo went
2-5.
Delaware will close out its southern
swing tomorrow with one more game with Coastal Carolina at
12 noon.
