Saturday, March 4, 2000
WILMINGTON, DE - Behind 15 runs, 17
hits and a combined shoutout from Rich McGuire and
Jeff Romond in game two, the University of Delaware
salvaged a split with Dartmouth College, losing 5-1 in the
first game, and taking the second game 15-0, Saturday
afternoon at Frawley Stadium.
In game two, Delaware jumped out to an
8-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a Chris
Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/ Cherry Hill East) single that
drove in Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic)
and Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern). Dartmouth
pitcher Brian Gattis faced the first six batters of the game
and allowed each of them to reach base. As a result, all
six batters scored to put Delaware up 6-0.
Delaware continued the rout as it scored
in each of its next four innings. Peter Maestrales
(Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) doubled knocking in
junior Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) as
he scored one of his four runs in the game. The Hens got
two in the third when junior Bobby Fry (Anaheim
Hills, CA/Canyon) hit the Hens first homerun of the season,
a two-run homer knocking in Steve Harden (Wilmington,
DE/Dickinson) on the shot. Delaware picked up two runs in
each of the next two innings to seal the victory. Every
Delaware offensive starter had a hit.
McGuire (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur)
pitched six innings of three-hit shutout baseball for the
victory. He also retired eight batters on strikeouts.
Co-captain Romond (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov.
Livingston) came into the game in the seventh for the Hens.
In game one, Dartmouth defeated the Hens
5-1, behind a complete-game four hitter from pitcher Conor
Brooks. Dartmouth scored two in the first inning and three
in the second to lead 5-1. After a double by Fahy and a
single by Vukovich that drove in Fahy in the first inning,
Delaware had just two other hits, which were singles by
Kolodzey and John Schneider (Lawrenceville,
NJ/Lawrence). Dave Mullin (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley)
fell to 1-1 following the loss to Dartmouth. Vic
Sage (Springfield, PA/Springfield) also appeared for two
innings on the mound for the Hens.
Dartmouth (1-1) will travel to play
America East foe Hofstra in a doubleheader on Sunday.
Delaware (2-3) will battle Rider on
Tuesday at Delaware Diamond at 3 p.m.
