CONWAY, SC - Behind seven strong
innings from co-captain Dave Mullin and a pair of 3
for 5 days from Andrew Salvo and Casey Fahy,
the University of Delaware opened the 2000 baseball season
with a 10-9 victory over Furman University, Thursday
afternoon at Coastal Carolina University.
Delaware (1-0) got off to a quick start
in the first inning when junior Salvo doubled home Fahy and
Vince Vukovich. Delaware led 2-1 into the fourth when
the Hens scored five runs, boosted by a one-out single that
drove in Chris Kolodzey and John Schneider.
Furman (3-6) trailed 10-2 into the
seventh when the Paladins rallied for four runs behind
doubles from James Bright and Cole Hubka. The Paladins
trailed 9-6 in the ninth when they scored three runs with no
outs, making it 10-9.
Delaware closer Jeff Romond
slammed the door on the Paladins when he struck out Ryan
Richetti and got Adam Etherington and Bright to ground out
to short to record the save. Furman left the tying run at
first base.
Delaware will return to action on Friday
when it battles host Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
