February 24, 2000

CONWAY, SC - Behind seven strong innings from co-captain Dave Mullin and a pair of 3 for 5 days from Andrew Salvo and Casey Fahy, the University of Delaware opened the 2000 baseball season with a 10-9 victory over Furman University, Thursday afternoon at Coastal Carolina University.

Delaware (1-0) got off to a quick start in the first inning when junior Salvo doubled home Fahy and Vince Vukovich. Delaware led 2-1 into the fourth when the Hens scored five runs, boosted by a one-out single that drove in Chris Kolodzey and John Schneider.

Furman (3-6) trailed 10-2 into the seventh when the Paladins rallied for four runs behind doubles from James Bright and Cole Hubka. The Paladins trailed 9-6 in the ninth when they scored three runs with no outs, making it 10-9.

Delaware closer Jeff Romond slammed the door on the Paladins when he struck out Ryan Richetti and got Adam Etherington and Bright to ground out to short to record the save. Furman left the tying run at first base.

Delaware will return to action on Friday when it battles host Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
