Vukovich's home run was his second of the season and came
on a 1-0 fastball from Northeastern reliever and loser Ken
Henry (4-5), who allowed just the one hit in 1.2 innings in
the longest game in the eight-year history of the America
East Championship. The Blue Hens, 35-18, advance to the
winner's bracket of the championship where they will play
University of Vermont, an 8-7 winner over Towson University,
at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The Huskies, 23-23, play Towson at 12
noon.
The game was a pitcher's duel between 1999 America East
Pitcher of the Year Greg Montalbano of Northeastern and 2000
America East Pitcher of the Year Rich McGuire of
Delaware. Montalbano pitched 10 innings and allowed 10 hits
while striking out six and walking four. McGuire allowed
nine hits in eight innings, striking out eight and walking
three. Jason Vincent (7-3) earned the win with four
innings of two-hit, scoreless relief.
The Huskies scored first when Hernan Guerrero led off the
second inning with a single and advanced to third on a
one-out single by Brendan Ryan. Omar Pena delivered a
sacrifice fly to right field to score Guerrero.
Delaware took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. Casey
Fahy led off the inning with a double to left field and
advanced to third on a throwing error by Ben Beck. America
East Player of the Year Andrew Salvo followed with a triple
down the left field line to tie the game, 1-1. Chris
Kolodzey singled through the left side for a 2-1 Blue
Hen lead and Peter Maestrales doubled to right field to
score Kolodzey.
Northeastern forced the extra innings with two runs in
the seventh. Mike Wysong led off with a home run down the
left field line to cut the lead to 3-2. Steve Padovani
singled to left field and Luke Carlin followed with a double
to left field to put runners at second and third with no
outs. Matt Keating's ground out to short scored Padovani to
tie it, 3-3. McGuire then struck out Beck and got Pedro Pena
to line to left field after an intentional walk to Guerrero
to end the threat.
