WILMINGTON, DE - Seven hits guide the Blue Hens to two runs aided by a three for four night from Reid Gorecki, but it was not enough as the Wilmington Blue Rocks shut down Delaware in front of a sparse pre-season crowd, Wednesday night at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE. Delaware scored first in the top half of the first as Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) walked to lead off the ballgame. Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) followed with a single that hit first base umpire Jon McArdle. Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by second baseman Eric Nelson. With the error, Delaware plated Fahy for its first run in the series three-year history. The Wilmington Blue Rocks, the Class-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, got even in the second when Jose Taveras scored an unearned run off of starting pitcher Tim Lorito (Huntington Station, NY/Connetquote) resulting from a Alexis Gomez single to right field. Delaware regained the lead, 2-1 in the fourth, when pinch hitter Doug Eitelman (Wilmington, DE/Concord) reached on a single to right center. Eitelman later scored on a Ryan Shipton (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) single to deep short. Wilmington proved why they have been two-time defending Carolina League Champions in the bottom half of the fifth, as they posted three runs off of relief pitcher Jeff Romond (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston). The Rocks added one run in the sixth to close out the scoring at 5-2. The other Blue Hen hits came from Salvo, with a triple, and senior Ryan Preziosi (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.). Prior to the game, Wilmington Blue Rock's owner Matt Minker presented Coach Bob Hannah with a Blue Rocks jersey with the number 26 on the back to honor Hannah for his many years of service. Minker is himself a Delaware Baseball alum. Delaware will next compete Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. as it takes on Temple at the Liberty Bell Championship at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The Blue Rocks open the 2000 season on Thursday at Frawley Stadium as they host the Frederick Keys.
