Delaware 7, Delaware State 6
Thursday, May 11, 2000

NEWARK, DE - A three-run ninth and a walk-off double from Andrew Salvo in the 10th inning, gave Delaware a 7-6 come from behind victory over intrastate rival Delaware State, Thursday afternoon at Delaware Diamond in baseball. Delaware is now 11-0 all-time against Delaware State.

In a game being made up from last evening's rain-out at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE, the game featured teacher versus student as Delaware's Bob Hannah would coach his final game at Delaware Diamond against his former pupil, Tripp Keister.

Delaware second baseman Andrew Salvo hit the all-important game-winning double which drove home Reid Gorecki to win the 11th straight against Delaware State
The Hornets (25-15), who closed out their season this afternoon, jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second and stretched it to 5-0 by the end of their at-bats in the third. In inning two, Delaware State's Rick Mosley, who finished the day batting two for three, drove in the first run of the game and his first of three runs on the day on a double to right center field. The Hornets scored two runs following a Roger Richardson groundout and a Dion Miller single. Mosley singled in the third, driving home Kelly Williams and John Zimmerman.

Delaware (31-17) answered with a run in the third as Peter Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) singled home Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's), who doubled. The Hens added a run in the fifth on a Salvo sacrifice fly.

Delaware State was in control for most of the game behind pitcher John Sterling, who pitched eight and one-third innings, giving up just four earned runs.

The Hornets led 6-3 in the ninth inning when Delaware began to work its magic. Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) led-off by being hit by a pitch. America East Rookie of the Week Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) followed with a double to right center field. Salvo knocked in Fahy by grounding out to Williams at shortstop. Delaware State then went to Tim Vallancourt who faced Chris Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/East) and Kolodzey hit an RBI double down the left field line. Following two walks to Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) and John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence Twp.), Vallancourt struck Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) with a pitch which drove home Kolodzey. Delaware ended the ninth in a 6-6 tie with Delaware State.

Delaware relief pitcher Jason Vincent (Seaford, DE/Seaford) shut down the Hornets in the tenth and left it up to the offense. Fahy led-off by reaching base on a Vallancourt throwing error. Gorecki reached on a bunt base hit, but Fahy was thrown out at third on the play. After Gorecki advanced to second on a passed ball before Salvo ended all Hornet hopes of winning its first game of the season, with a walk-off double, his team-leading 25th double of the season, to right center field, scoring Gorecki. After 10 innings and five Delaware pitchers, the Hens prevailed 7-6.

On the afternoon, Gorecki went three for six while Salvo, Maestrales and Schneider each had two hits.

Delaware will close out its 2000 regular season on Saturday and Sunday, taking on the Towson Tigers in Towson, These doubleheaders will have a bearing on the seddings for the upcoming America East Tournament in Wilmington, DE. The doubleheaders this weekend begin at 12:00 noon.
