0 Sage Hurls Gem as Blue Hens Advance to Semifinals
The Blue Hens (11-8) won their second straight game and now advance to the Liberty Bell semifinals to face St. Joseph's next Tuesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Vet. Semifinal winners of the eight-team single elimination tournament will meet April 6. St. Joseph's was a first round 20-6 winner over LaSalle. Drexel, which had lost to Rider earlier in the day, fell to 7-13. Despite Delaware and Drexel being members of the America East conference, the game did not count as a league game. Sage, who entered the game with a 12.38 ERA in eight innings this season, hurled his first career shutout as he held the Dragons to just six hits and a walk while striking out seven batters. He got out of a big jam in the fourth inning when, after allowing runners on second and third with no out, he struck out Josh Yocum and Jason Bailey and got Ryan Lucas to line out to centerfield. Delaware got all the runs it needed in the second inning when third baseman Peter Maestrales singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch by loser Kevin Kulick (1-1). Designated hitter Reid Gorecki followed with an RBI double to left and then scored when catcher John Schneider followed with an RBI single. The Hens got just one hit the rest of the night when rightfielder Chris Kolodzey doubled in the seventh inning. Rob Martini collected two of the Dragon’s six hits.
