NEWARK, DE - Eight of the nine Delaware batters had a hit while six had multiple hits as the Blue Hens outslugged George Mason in an offensive game of baseball, Tuesday afternoon at Delaware Diamond. Delaware (10-8) fell behind early, 3-0, when starting pitcher Tim Lorito (Huntington Station, NY/Connetquote) gave up a lead-off home run to leftfielder Evan Howard, his first homer of the season. The Patriots had two more hits that led to two more runs in the inning. The Hens trailed 5-0 in the second inning when Chris Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) led off with a single, his first of four hits on the day. Peter Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) followed with a double that brought home Kolodzey. Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) singled home Maestrales and. the Hens added one more in the inning, making it 5-3. George Mason (10-15-1) led for most of the game. The Hens had tied the score at five in the third, but the Patriots regained the lead in the fourth, 7-5, on a Teddy Puitz two-run home run, his second of the season. As the rain began to fall, Delaware began to threaten in the sixth. With the score 7-5, bases empty and two outs, Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) walked and John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) doubled down the left field line off of starting pitcher Todd Simo. Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) tied the score on a single to second base. Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) hit a single and Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) doubled home Fahy and Vukovich for the lead, 9-7. Delaware added four more runs in the inning, resulting from a Kolodzey double, Maestrales triple and a Bobby Fry (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) home run. Delaware scored three runs in the seventh and went into the ninth leading 16-9. As nightfall descended upon Delaware Diamond, the Patriots began to mount a comeback. Relief pitcher Nick Spiewak (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) gave up one run and allowed the bases loaded when he gave up a Brain Anderson grand slam, the first of his career, making the score, 16-14. Delaware went to the pen and senior co-captain Jeff Romond (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston). Romond got designated hitter Brad Santmyer to fly out to Vukovich and Evan Howard to ground out to Dufner to end the ballgame. Romond picked up his second save while Spiewak recorded his first win of the year (1-1). Kolodzey finished the day four for five, needing just a triple to complete the cycle. Delaware has now won three straight games against George Mason. The Hens will take to the field tomorrow as they battle conference foe Drexel at the Liberty Bell quarterfinals at Veteran's Stadium in Philadelphia.
