Delaware 7, Hofstra 1. Sunday, April 16, 2000
NEWARK, DE - Behind a four for five day from Peter Maestrales, including a game-winning homerun in the sixth inning of game one, Delaware swept Hofstra University, 4-3 and 7-1, Sunday afternoon at Delaware Diamond in baseball. Delaware (21-12, 8-2 America East) fell behind in the first game, 3-0, when centerfielder John Rodriguez hit his second homerun of the season, driving home Danny Torres and Jake Soviero.
Delaware countered in the bottom half of the inning with three hits as Chris Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/East) led off with a single to center. Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) got his first hit of the day, doubling to left center and driving home Kolodzey. Later in the inning, John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence Twp.) singled to the right side, driving home Maestrales. Delaware threatened in the sixth as Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) got hit by a pitch, delivered by starting pitcher Doug Gannon. With Salvo on first and one man out, Maestrales got his third hit of the game, slamming a Gannon pitch over the left center field fence for a two-run homer, his 10th of the season, to put the Hens up for good. Hofstra (8-17-1, 2-8 America East) did not go quietly in the seventh. Trailing 4-3, Hofstra pinch-hitter Kevin Jenson singled to deep short with one out. Pinch-runner Edward Cook advanced to third base as a result of a groundout and wild pitch and Paul Ciofrone walked with two outs. Delaware starting pitcher Rich McGuire (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) got out of the jam as leftfielder Adam Russ flew out to Kolodzey to end the ballgame. McGuire finished the game with nine strikeouts, allowing just five hits on three runs. In the nightcap, Delaware batted around andjumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first behind six hits, highlighted by a Kolodzey triple. Delaware scored two more runs off of a Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) two-run double, scoring Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) and Maestrales. Delaware got doubles from Salvo, Harden, Vukovich and Maestrales while getting triples from Dufner and team-leader Kolodzey, who now has five. Dave Mullin (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) pitched a complete-game six-hitter, allowing one run while striking out two. With the win in game one, Delaware made it 28 straight seasons winning 20 or more baseball games. Delaware and Hofstra will go at it again on Monday for a doubleheader at Delaware Diamond at 12:00 noon. The first game on Monday will be the 1,500th career game for Coach Bob Hannah.
