Delaware 15, LaSalle 1 (Game 1) Delaware 3, LaSalle 2 (Game 2) March 19, 2000 NEWARK, DE - Behind an offensive explosion in game one and a two-hitter from Tim Lorito in game two, Delaware swept a doubleheader from LaSalle University, winning 15-1 and 3-2, respectively, Sunday at Delaware Diamond in baseball. Delaware led game one by a 3-1 score until the fifth inning when the Hens broke the game open with nine runs. The inning featured eight hits with Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) and Peter Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) getting two apiece. The inning began as Salvo doubled to left field. Maestrales singled and Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) drove both in with his first triple of the season, making the score 5-1. The inning's major highlight came on a three-run homerun off the bat of junior Chris Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) as he knocked in Salvo and Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). The Hens were stable on the mound as they got strong pitching from senior co-captain Dave Mullin (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley). He yielded just one run to the Explorers which came on a Jon Palumbo homerun in the fifth inning as he threw a complete game. The Hens and Explorers had a tighter battle in the second game. The Hens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second as they got back-to-back-to-back doubles from Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson), Dufner who drove in Harden and John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) who drove in Dufner. LaSalle (2-11) answered in the third as Steve Harris reached on a Harden error and later scored on a Kevin Wittmeyer sacrifice fly. Delaware scored in the fourth when Schneider hit his second double of the game, again knocking in Dufner. Lorito (Huntington Station, NY/Connetquote), Delaware starter for the second game, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but lost it on a Wittmeyer homerun. Lorito (1-1) finished the day with a complete game two- hitter. Harden, starting Delaware first baseman, left the game in the top of the fourth as he sustained an injury to his right ankle. He will be examined by the University of Delaware medical staff on Monday. Doug Eitelman (Wilmington, DE/Concord) replaced Harden in the field. With the win, Delaware (8-5) posted its 500th victory at Delaware Diamond (500-137-1). Delaware will next take to the field on Tuesday as it hosts the University of Connecticut for 3:00 p.m. start.
