Delaware 19, Maine 8 April 1, 2000 NEWARK, DE - Opening day was a day of extremes as Rich McGuire held Maine to one run in a first game decided by one run while the Hens broke through for 19 runs and 19 hits in the second game as Delaware swept Maine on day one of conference play, winning 2-1 and 19-8, in baseball, Saturday afternoon at Delaware Diamond. McGuire (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) pitched a superb first ballgame, giving up just one run on three hits while recording 11 strikeouts. The Hens drew first blood as freshman John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) hit his second homerun of the season, a solo shot to left in the third inning. Maine evened the score in the fifth as Joe Drapeau led off with a single to left, breaking up McGuire's perfect game. The next batter, Jamie Barrett, hit a line drive off of McGuire that ended up in shallow right field, resulting in a double. Julian Bracali grounded out to Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge), scoring Drapeau. Each team threatened in the next couple of innings, but the Hens made good on their threat in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. Peter Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) hit a single to left, driving home the winning run in Schneider Maine's Kris Ehmke (1-3) pitched a complete game for the Black Bears. McGuire moved to 5-1 on the season. Game two featured a totally different game of baseball. The Hens scored first in the first behind six runs. Chris Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) doubled to right-center field, driving in Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's). After Bobby Fry (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) and Maestrales walked, Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) doubled home all three of the runners, making it 4-0. Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) added his first homerun of the year , a two-run shot to left center, to round out the scoring at 6-0. With the score 6-2 in the third, Delaware sent 17 batters to the plate enroute to a 12-run inning. The inning was highlighted by a Schneider homerun, his second of the day and third of the season. Maestrales added his fourth homerun of the year in the fourth inning, closing out the scoring for the Hens on the day. Maine scored eight runs, all charged to starting pitcher Dave Mullin (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley). Maine scored five runs in the fifth as the Black Bars scattered five singles in the inning. Brian Zeigler (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) pitched two innings of one-hit shutout baseball in relief. The Hens have now won 17 straight conference-opening weekend games. Delaware (13-8, 2-0) and Maine (8-14, 0-2) will close the weekend set as the two teams do battle at Delaware Diamond at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
