12 Top-Seed Bruins Rally to Thwart Blue Hen Upset Bid
UCLA (36-24) battled back from a five-run deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth off Blue Hen reliever Vic Sage, winning the game on a bases loaded RBI single to left field by third baseman Randall Shelley with one out for the victory. The No. 4 seed Blue Hens, playing in their third straight NCAA regional but looking for their first NCAA win since 1992, will play the loser of Friday night's Oral Roberts vs. host Oklahoma game Saturday at 12 noon ET in the elimination game. UCLA will play the winner of ORU-Oklahoma game Saturday at 3 p.m. Delaware, which had won four straight games and 10 of its last 11, seemed to have the game in hand after scoring five runs in the sixth inning to go up 12-7. But the Bruins, a perennial Pac-10 Conference power, rallied with two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three more in the ninth to post the victory. Bobby Roe, who pitched four innings of relief and did not allow an earned run, picked up the win to improve to 7-5. Sage, who won Delaware's America East title clinching game back on May 20 over Northeastern, relieved freshman Jason Vincent in the ninth but allowed three runs and five hits and fell to 4-3. UCLA, which entered the game with a team batting average of .326, banged out 20 hits and overcame six errors. First baseman Garrett Atkins went 4 for 6 and knocked in five runs and hit for the cycle to lead the Bruins. Catcher Forrest Johnson went 3 for 6 with a home run and three RBI and second baseman Chad Utley went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBI. Delaware banged out 12 hits of its own, scoring six runs in the third inning behind a two-run home run from Steve Harden, the Hens' lone extra base hit, to go up 6-2. Delaware catcher John Schneider knocked in three runs while right fielder Chris Kolodzey was 3 for 6 with two RBI and America East Player of the Year Andrew Salvo was 2 for 6 and keyed the five-run sixth with a two-run single. Delaware's America East Pitcher of the Year Rich McGuire started and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs before giving way to Vincent in the sixth. The Hens chased UCLA starter Rob Henkel and reliever Kevin Jerkens in the sixth before Roe came in to shut the door. UCLA entered the final inning down 12-10. Bill Scott doubled home Utley who had led off with a double and Johnson followed with a double to plate Scott.
