2 Oral Roberts Eliminates Blue Hens; Hannah Coaches Final Game
Oral Roberts (49-14) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and starter Jordan Gerk (8-5) held the Hens in check all day, allowing just two runs and seven hits, to eliminate Delaware from the tournament. The No. 3 seed Golden Eagles, who lost their regional opener 6-5 in 11 innings to No. 2 seed Oklahoma in a game that did not end until 2 a.m. Saturday morning, move on to Saturday night's elimination game vs. the loser of the UCLA-Oklahoma second round game. For the Blue Hens, it was second straight disappointing loss and one that marked the end of a remarkable 36-year coaching career for Bob Hannah. No. 2 seed Delaware (37-20) let a five-run lead slip away in Friday's 13-12 loss to top seed UCLA when the Bruins scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win. Hannah coached his final game for the Blue Hens, ending a career that saw him post a 36-year record of 1,053-464-6, ranking him 21st all-time in Division I baseball for career victories. The AFCA Hall of Famer led the Blue Hens to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and 11 league titles during his tenure. Associate head coach Jim Sherman will take over the reigns next season. "I thought the difference in today's game was the play of Gerk and and their defense," said Hannah. "I thought we played as aggressive as we could, we just couldn't get anything against him. I am really proud of my kids, not only in this tournament but also this entire year. It has been a great career and this was a great way to end it, playing in an NCAA regional. I was particularly happy to see our kids play well and not back down against anyone." Oral Roberts jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Blue Hen senior starter Dave Mullin (10-5 - Ridley/Swarthmore, PA) as shortstop Steve Holm collected an RBI single in the first and a run-scoring ground out in the third and centerfielder Jeff Stallings and second baseman Brian Gann each knocked in runs in the fourth inning. The left-handed Gerk (8-5) held the Blue Hen scoreless until the fifth inning when freshman rightfielder Reid Gorecki, (Kellenberg/East Rockaway, NY) who collected three of the Hens' nine hits, singled home shortstop Kris Dufner (Father Judge/Philadelphia, PA), who had walked, with two outs. Delaware could not mount another attack until the final inning when designated hitter Vince Vukovich (Eastern/Voorhees, NJ) led off with a single, chasing Gerk and bringing in ORU relief ace Jackson Markert. First baseman Steve Harden (Dickinson HS) greeted Markert with a single and Bobby Fry (Canyon/Anaheim Hills, CA) moved Vukovich to third on a fielder's choice. The Hens then cut the lead to 4-2 when Casey Fahy (Gloucester Catholic/Clayton, NJ) knocked in Vukovich with an RBI single. But Markert struck out Gorecki and got America East Player of the Year Andrew Salvo (St. Anthony's/East Islip, NY) to line out to leftfield to end the threat. Markert picked up his 15th save of the season. Fahy and third baseman Peter Maestrales (Pope John Paul II/Delray Beach, FL) each collected two hits for the Hens with Maestrales adding a double in the first inning. Salvo went 0 for 4 but finished the season batting a team-best .419.
