Rutgers (33-13/No. 18 in Baseball America Poll) scored early and often. The Scarlet Knights got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBI single from Joe B. Cirone and a two-run RBI double from designated hitter Mike Popowski. Delaware (26-16) was behind 5-0 before it
got on the board in the fourth. Vince Vukovich
(Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) singled home Chris Kolodzey
(Cherry Hill, NJ/East), who reached on a single.
The Scarlet Knights were led by Fenster, who went two for three with three runs scored. Also, Jake Daubert, Todd Speedy, Popowski and Ken Ulrich had multiple-hit games. Wheeler started the game, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out four batters. The Hens had multiple-hit games from Vukovich and Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's). Brian Zeigler (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) started his second game of the year for the Hens in the loss. Rutgers now leads the overall series, 27-23, winning the last four meetings. Delaware last won in 1995, defeating Rutgers, 10-1 at Delaware Diamond. Delaware will take to the field on Wednesday hosting UMBC at 3:00 p.m. in the final home game of the 2000 baseball campaign.
