Hens Get Boost From Bottom of the Order; Nip Hawks to Advance to LBC Finals
The Blue Hens, who scored nine runs on just nine hits but took advantage of thee Hawk errors, three wild pitches, and four hit batsmen, improved to 15-9 on the season and advanced to the Liberty Bell Classic semifinals for the eight time in nine years. The Hens will face Temple, a 10-6 semifinal winner over Lehigh earlier Tuesday, in the finals Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at Veteran’s Stadium. Delaware has won four of the eight LBC titles.
St. Joseph’s, which dropped to 10-18 after falling to the Blue Hens for the second time this season, banged out 17 hit but could manage just eight runs. The Hawks scored two runs in the ninth inning and had runners on first and third but Blue Hen reliever Vic Sage struck out Pace Bradshaw to end the game. Mike DeVincentis went 3 for 4, scored three runs, knocked in three, and hit his second home run of the season to pace the St. Joseph’s attack. Eric Wyatt had a double and a triple and knocked in one run while Tim Gunn had two RBI. Doug Fischer (4-3) took the loss, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings. St. Joseph’s opened the scoring with three run in the third but the Hens countered with four in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go up 7-4. Delaware added some much needed insurance in the sixth inning by scoring two runs to go up 9-6. Sage scattered six hits in three inning of relief of starter and first time career winner Brian Ziegler (1-0) to notch his first save of the season. Vince Vukovich and Andrew Salvo each knocked in a run with Salvo collecting two hits as well for the Blue Hens. AGATE:
