Delaware (34-18, 19-5 AMERICA EAST) was led by Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's), who not only had a stellar day at the plate, but tied the school record for stolen bases in a season with 31 (last done by Mark Rubini in 1986). Salvo finished the weekend series going 11 for 15 at the plate. The Hens fell behind in game one 2-0, but rallied and took the lead in the third inning, 4-2. Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) got the ball rolling with a one-out double to right center. Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern), followed with a double down the right field line, scoring Gorecki. Salvo hit a single to the right side to drive home Vukovich, while Peter Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) closed out the inning's scoring binge with his team-leading 13th homerun, clearing the left center field fence. The Hens added two in the fifth behind a Vukovich double, Salvo single and a Chris Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/East) RBI groundout.
The Hens and Tigers played two scoreless innings of baseball in game two before the Hens broke through for three in the third. Senior Ryan Preziosi (Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.), who reached base in every at bat in this game, opened the inning being struck by a Bryan Rogers pitch. Preziosi then stole his first of two bases on the afternoon, before he moved over to third on a Gorecki bunt single. Vukovich knocked Preziosi home with a single up the middle, moving Gorecki to third. Salvo followed with an RBI single. Maestrales hit a sacrifice fly to left, driving home Vukovich. Delaware put together three runs in the fifth behind singles from Salvo, Maestrales, Bobby Fry (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) and Preziosi. In the sixth, the Hens added two runs when Gorecki and Salvo scored on a wild pitch. Starting pitcher Sage (Springfield, PA/Springfield) pitched a completegame, striking out four while giving up just one run on six hits. Delaware will take on Northeastern, who lost twice to Vermont on Sunday, falling 5-4 and 8-4. The other America East first round game will feature No. 2 seed Towson (31-21-1, 19-9 AMERICA EAST) against No. 3 seed Vermont (27-20, 16-10 AMERICA EAST) at 3:30 p.m. All America East Baseball Championship Tournament action will take place at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE on May 18-20, 2000.
