NEWARK, DE - Behind an unanswered four-run rally in the top half of the sixth inning, the University of Connecticut ended Delaware's four-game winning streak with a 6-4 victory in baseball, Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Diamond. Connecticut (8-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Centerfielder Michael Scott reached on a Peter Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) error to open the game and he later scored when starting pitching Rich McGuire (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) unleashed his third wild pitch of the season. Leftfielder Cy Hess scored on a Kevin Wissner sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0. Delaware (8-6) got even in the bottom half of the second inning as Maestrales walked and Bobby Fry (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) doubled. Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) drove in Maestrales on a Joe Kagerer error. Fry scored when Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) grounded into a double play. The Hens took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Maestrales, who reached on a Brian Tisbert error, scored on a Robert Barton wild pitch. They extended the lead to 4-2 in the same inning when Fry scored on a Vukovich single. The Huskies took the lead for the good in the sixth inning. Catcher Brian Esposito reached on a Dufner error followed by a Kagerer single. Scott doubled in both Esposito and Kagerer to tie the score. Hess singled to bring in Scott for the lead, 5-4. The Huskies added an insurance run when Hess stole second, advanced to third on a John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) throwing error and scored on Clarke Caudill single. All of the Huskies damage was done with two outs. Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had two hits while Fry had the only extra base hit for the Hens. The game was scheduled for only seven innings due to weather considerations. Delaware will travel to Temple on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
