April 12, 2000 Maestrales, Dufner, Kolodzey Key Blue Hen Romp
BALTIMORE, MD - Designated hitter Peter Maestrales (Pope John Paul/Delray Beach, Fla.) and third baseman Kris Dufner (Father Judge/Philadelphia, PA) combined for four of the University of Delaware’s five home runs and combined to knock in 11 runs en route to a 16-3 romp over host Maryland Baltimore County Wednesday at UMBC’s Alumni Field. The Blue Hens (19-12), who banged out 17 hits against five UMBC pitchers, snapped a two-game losing streak as they scored three runs in the third inning, five in the fourth, and tagged on seven in the eighth on the way to the victory. UMBC, whom the Hens have defeated five straight times, fell to 18-14-1.
Also getting into the act for the Blue Hens was junior outfielder Chris Kolodzey (East/Cherry Hill, NJ) who went 2 for 4 and knocked in four runs with an RBI single in the fourth inning and three-run home run in the eighth inning. Kolodzey was also hit by two pitches on the day and scored three runs. The Hens made a winner of senior co-captain Jeff Romond who improve to 1-0 in only his third career start. Romond went seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Steve Harden and Nick Spiewak each pitched an inning of relief for the Hens. No Retreiver batter had more than one hit on the afternoon. Tony Watkins (1-1) took the loss for UMBC after taking over for starter Tom Bloom in the third inning and allowing eight runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of work. AGATE:
