Delaware's Reid Gorecki Named to the St. Louis Cardinals 40 Man Roster

Date: January 6, 2005

ST. LOUIS, MO (January 6, 2005) -- Former University of Delaware standout outfielder Reid Gorecki (Delaware '02) has recently been named to the 40 man roster of the National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals organization after a stellar performance with the club's Arizona Fall League team the Mesa Solar Sox.

Gorecki, a 13th round draft pick for St. Louis in 2002, hit for a .365 average with nine doubles, four steals and 15 walks in 102 at bats for the Solar Sox this fall.

Prior to Mesa he played at Double-A Tennessee where in 25 at bats he hit .320 after making a seamless late season transition from Class A Palm Beach when he appeared at the plate on 440 occasions and hit for .277.

Cardinals farm team director Bruce Manno commented on Gorecki saying, "He had a good season. He did well when he went to Tennessee and in the playoffs. Having an opportunity to go to the fall league was another chance for him to face more experienced pitching, and he handled it very well."

At Delaware Gorecki found himself in the top five in single season record books with 34 stolen bases in 2002, good for second place and nine triples in that same year good for third while he ranks third on the Delaware career list for stolen bases with 76.

In 2002 he had a standout season, leading the team in batting average, hitting .414 and also tying for the lead in home runs with Steve Van Note with 12 each while leading the team in stolen bases with 22.

Gorecki will join the roster for the Cardinals upcoming spring training as a center fielder. St. Louis will open its spring season at home against Florida Atlantic University on March 2, 2005.

Gorecki will join the ranks of former University of Delaware players as Kevin Mench (Texas Rangers) and Mike Kopolove (Arizona Diamondbacks) who are also currently enjoying success in Major League Baseball.

The St. Louis Cardinals finished last season as the National League champions, earning them a trip to the World Series before falling to the Boston Red Sox.
