Sherman Debut as Head Coach
MYRTLE BEACH, SC &endash; Host
Coastal Carolina spoiled the head coaching debut of Jim
Sherman Friday afternoon as the Chanticleers downed the
University of Delaware 5-3 in the Baseball at the Beach
Tournament at Coastal Federal Field.
The Hens, making their 2001 season
debut under Sherman, will play two more games in Myrtle
Beach Saturday, taking on Kent State at 3 p.m. and Coastal
Carolina again at 7 p.m. Delaware will close out the
four-game southern trip Sunday vs. Western
Carolina.
Sherman, a former Blue Hen standout
outfielder and seven-year assistant coach, took over this
year for Bob Hannah, who retired this past spring
following a Hall of Fame career that saw him win over 1,000
games over 36 seasons.
Coastal Carolina (6-4) got seven shutout
innings from starter Steven Carter (2-0) and shortstop Aaron
Mayhew knocked in three runs on three hits to lead the
Chanticleer attack.
Delaware managed just five hits on the
day with All-American second baseman Andrew Salvo,
the 2000 America East Player of the Year, going 2 for 4 with
one run scored. Rightfielder Chris Kolodzey,
designated hitter Vince Vukovich, and first baseman
Steve Harden each knocked in a run for the Hens.
Vukovich also stole two bases.
All-American right hander Rich
McGuire, the 2000 America East Pitcher of the Year, took
the loss for the Hens, allowing five runs and eight hits in
5 2/3 innings to fall to 0-1. He struck out three and walked
two before giving way to Brian Zeigler, who pitched
two-plus shutout innings.
Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the second
inning as Harden walked with the bases loaded. But Coastal
Carolina came back with two runs in the bottom half of the
inning on a two-run double by Mayhew and led the rest of the
way, scoring one run in the fourth and two more in the
sixth. The Hens’ two eighth-inning runs were not
enough.
