Game as Blue Hen Head Coach

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The University of
Delaware baseball team gave new head coach Jim
Sherman his first career victory at Delaware as the Blue
Hens posted a 6-1 victory over Kent State in the second
round of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament Saturday at
Coastal Federal Field.
In their second game of the day, the Blue
Hens (1-2) fell to host Coastal Carolina (8-4) by a score of
9-8. The Blue Hens lost the opener of the tournament to
Coastal Carolina by a 5-3 score on Friday.
Sherman, an assistant at Delaware the
last six seasons, took over for Hall of Fame coach Bob
Hannah who retired last spring following a 36-year
career that included over 1,000 victories. Sherman
previously posted a record of 215-125 in seven seasons at
NAIA power Wilmington (DE) College before joining the
Delaware staff.
Delaware sophomore Jason Vincent
(1-0) put in an impressive performance on the mound for the
Blue Hens vs. Kent State, allowing just seven hits, one
earned run, and striking out eight batters without a walk.
The Blue Hens banged out eight hits on the day as third
baseman Peter Maestrales knocked in two runs and
right fielder Chris Kolodzey hit a solo home run, his
first of the season, to lead off the second inning. Casey
Fahy, Kris Dufner, and Steve Harden also knocked
in runs for the Hens.
Jason Biniker took the loss for Kent
State (0-2), allowing five five hits and three earned runs
in five innings. Designated hitter John VanBenschoten went 4
for 4 for the Flash.
In the nightcap, Coastal Carolina
designated hitter Adam Keim banged out four hits, including
three doubles, and knocked in six runs to lead the
Chanticleers.
Delaware tied the score at 3-3 in the top
of the sixth, but Coastal Carolina answered with four runs
in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the eighth
for the win. The Hens scored five runs in the ninth but the
rally fell short as Vince Vukovich grounded out with
a runner on second base to end the game.
Delaware banged out 11 hits vs. Coastal
Carolina as second baseman Andrew Salvo went 3 for 5
with an RBI and shortstop Kris Dufner was 2 for 4.
Vic Sage (0-1) took the loss for the Hens, allowing
five earned runs in 5.2 innings. Brian Fischer (1-0) picked
up the win for Coastal Carolina as he struck out 11 UD
batters in seven innings. Steve Soja pitched two-thirds of
an inning for the save.
