Delaware 2, Drexel 0 Delaware 8, Drexel 2 May 5, 2001 Blue Hens clinch spot in conference tournament with sweep of Dragons Rich McGuire pitched a complete game shutout Vic Sage did not allow an earned run in his final appearance in Newark NEWARK, DE -- Rich McGuire pitched a complete game shutout in the opener and Vic Sage allowed zero earned runs in the nightcap as the University of Delaware swept a baseball doubleheader from Drexel, 2-0 and 8-2, Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium. The two wins put Delaware (35-12) at 17-5 in the conference, securing a berth in the upcoming America East Tournament at Frawley Stadium. The first game featured a pitchers' duel between McGuire and Drexel starter Eric Metzger. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when third baseman Peter Maestrales doubled down the rightfield line to open the inning and advanced to third on a groundout by Chris Kolodzey. After a pop out, John Schneider walked, Kris Dufner was hit by a pitch, and Teddy Puitz drew a bases-loaded walk on a full count pitch to force home Maestrales with the game-winning run. Maestrales added an insurance run in the fifth by hitting a long home run to rightfield. Those runs would prove to be enough for McGuire (8-3), who allowed just four hits and a walk. Drexel (13-33-1, 10-12) did get two runners on base in the seventh, but McGuire got catcher Rob Martine to hit into a double play to end the game. The Hens jumped on Drexel starter Shane Carroll in the second game, scoring six runs in the first inning. Andrew Salvo reached on an error to lead off the inning, and a walk to Maestrales and a single by Kolodzey loaded the bases with one out. After all three runners moved up on a wild pitch, Vince Vukovich singled home Maestrales and Schneider singled in Kolodzey to make the score 3-0. A walk to Dufner loaded the bases again, and after Steve Harden struck out, Casey Fahy beat out a groundball to first base to score two more runs. Salvo ended the scoring in the inning with a single to rightfield to score Dufner. Drexel got two unearned runs back in the second on zero hits, thanks to an error by Dufner, a hit batter, and a dropped fly ball by Vukovich. Delaware got a run back in the bottom of the second when Kolodzey singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Schneider. The Hens finished the scoring in the third on consecutive doubles by Fahy and Salvo. Sage (7-2), making his final appearance at Bob Hannah Stadium, gave up just two hits, both in the fourth inning, and walked only one.
