Delaware 8, Drexel 0 Delaware 8, Drexel 7 May 6, 2001 Blue Hens Win Four Games From Dragons Jason Vincent threw his second complete game shutout of the season NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore righthander Jason Vincent hurled a complete game shutout in the opener and Vince Vukovich went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the nightcap as the University of Delaware baseball team swept its second doulbeheader from Drexel in as many days, winning 8-0 and 8-7 Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium. The wins improve Delaware to 37-12 overall and 19-5 in the America East, two full games ahead of second-place Maine, which split a twinbill Sunday with Vermont. The Blue Hens wasted no time in taking the lead in the opener, as Andrew Salvo singled to open the inning and scored on a double by Chris Kolodzey. Vukovich then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Peter Maestrales, who had reached after getting hit by a pitch. Drexel (13-35-1, 10-14) loaded the bases against Vincent with two outs in the top of the third, but catcher John Schneider picked Rob Martine off first base to end the inning. Delaware added a run in the bottom of the inning when Reid Gorecki singled, stole second and third, and scored on a groundout by Kolodzey. Gorecki, who went a combined 3-for-5 with five runs scored in the doubleheader, led off the fifth with a single and moved to second on a walk to Maestrales. After a double steal, Kolodzey singled home Gorecki, and Vukovich followed with a two-run single to put the Hens up 6-0. Schneider then doubled home Vukovich and scored on a single by Salvo to conclude the scoring. Meanwhile, Vincent cruised after the third inning, allowing just two singles in the final four innings to improve to 8-1 on the season. In the nightcap, Delaware again jumped on top of the Dragons in the first inning. Gorecki walked with one out, and after a walk to Maestrales and a wild pitch, scored on a groundout by Kolodzey. Maestrales then scored on a triple by Vukovich. The Hens added an unearned run in the third to make it 3-0 before Drexel, which did not score an earned run in the first three games of the series, finally broke through. A double by Ben Sniecinski, a single by Martine, and a bunt single by Dave DeMarco loaded the bases with no outs against Delaware starter Mike Mihalik. Jason Bailey then doubled to leftfield, scoring three runs to tie the game. The Dragons had a chance to take the lead, but Harry Ley grounded into a double play. Delaware blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Salvo led off the inning with a single, and after a sacrifice bunt, walks to Maestrales and Kolodzey loaded the bases. Vukovich then singled into rightfield to score two runs. The Hens added two more runs on a Drexel error and a wild pitch. After each team added a run in the sixth, Drexel scored three runs off reliever Mike Pelcher in the seventh and had the tying run on base. But Pelcher struck out Steve DeMarco looking to end the game.
