Delaware 24, Delaware State 3 Saturday, March 10, 2001 Sherman's Home Debut a Success in Rout of In-state Rivals NEWARK, DE - Behind four hits and three RBI from Peter Maestrales and another three hits and three RBI from John Schneider, Delaware slammed Delaware State, 24-3, in baseball action at the 2001 home-opener at Bob Hannah Stadium. Peter Maestrales Delaware State (10-4) opened the game with two runs in the first as Scott Martin drove in Kelly Williams with a one-out double and later scored on a Bret Underwood single. Delaware (3-5) answered with six runs in its half of the first, highlighted by a Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) triple the scored Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's). Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) capped the inning with two-run homer, his first of the season, to give Delaware a 6-2 lead. Delaware added three runs in the second, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth to take control. The Blue Hens also scored single runs in the sixth and seventh before caping off the scoring with seven runs in the eighth. Eight of the 14 Hens who stepped to the plate had multiple hits. Frank Fresconi (New Castle, DE/William Penn/Bucknell) had four RBI, while Maestrales (4-for-6), Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) (3-for-4), Doug Eitelman (Wilmington, DE/Concord) and Bobby Fry (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon) had three RBI each. Pitcher Rich McGuire (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) picked up his first victory of the season behind six innings of work. The 24 runs were the most by Delaware since a 29-5 victory at Rider back on April 16, 1997.
