No. 18 Pirates Come Back To Defeat Hens Twice

Peter Maestrales had five hits Friday

GREENVILLE, NC -- Peter Maestrales went a combined 5-for-10 in the two games but it wasn't enough as East Carolina came back in both games to defeat Delaware 11-9 and 13-8 in baseball action Friday at Harrington Field in Greenville.

The Blue Hens (1-5) got three hits from Maestrales and Chris Kolodzey in the opener, and took a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh after a three-run sixth and a four-run seventh. Reid Gorecki and Teddy Puitz each added two hits as the Hens banged out 13 for the game in a losing effort.

With the Hens up five, the Pirates' Joseph Hastings hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to two. The score remained the same until the ninth. Hens reliever Vic Sage hit the leadoff batter, but retired the next two Pirates. However, John Williamson singled in a run and Lee Delfino hit a two-run homer to win the game.

East Carolina (13-0), the 18th-ranked team in this weeks's ABCA poll, jumped on Delaware starter Jason Vincent in the nightcap, scoring three in the first and two in the second.

Delaware stormed back with four in the third and three in the seventh to take a 8-7 lead, but the Pirates scored three in the seventh and three in the eighth to sweep the twinbill.

The two teams will finish the series Saturday with a single game at 2 p.m. The clubs will not play Sunday, as originally planned.
