Delaware 10, East Carolina 7, 10 innings March 3, 2001 Blue Hens Defeat First Ranked Opponent Since 1983 Kris Dufner Hit Two Home Runs Saturday GREENVILLE, NC -- Sophomore shortstop Kris Dufner hit a solo home run with one out in the ninth inning to tie the game and hit a three-run shot in the tenth to win it as the Delaware baseball team came back to defeat East Carolina 10-7 in 10 innings Saturday at Harrington Field in Greenville. After taking an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Peter Maestrales, the Blue Hens (2-5) fell behind 5-2 heading into the top of the eighth. But Dufner led off with a walk, Casey Fahy walked, Andrew Salvo singled, and Maestrales doubled to get the Hens within one with nobody out. Delaware tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Chris Kolodzey. The Pirates (13-1), who lost their first game of the season, got the lead right back in the bottom of the eighth when John Poppert hit a two-out RBI double off of Delaware reliever Rob Ogilvie. Dufner then hit the first of his two homers to tie the game in the ninth. East Carolina, which entered the game ranked 18th in this week's ABCA poll and is the first ranked team Delaware has defeated since beating No. 16 South Carolina 12-11 in the 1983 NCAA Regionals in Chapel Hill, NC, had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth. The Pirates loaded the bases with two outs, but Ogilvie got Lee Delfino to pop up to end the threat. Delaware wasted no time in taking the lead in the tenth, as Kolodzey led off the frame with a home run, his third of the season. With two outs and Vince Vukovich on first, John Schneider reached on an error by Pirates third baseman Bryant Ward. Dufner made East Carolina pay by hitting a three-run homer, and the error was magnified as Poppert homered off Ogilvie in the bottom of the tenth to close the scoring. Delaware freshman starter Mike Mihalik pitched well for the Hens, allowing just one earned run and three hits in six innings. Mihalik was hurt by a Reid Gorecki error with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth. All three runners scored, giving the Pirates a 5-2 advantage. Maestrales went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in for the Hens, while Salvo was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
