Patriots Get Two in the Ninth to Beat Hens

Andrew Salvo went 2-for-4 with two RBI

FAIRFAX, VA -- Jeff Palumbo hit a fly ball over the Delaware drawn-in outfield to plate Scott Yeager as George Mason rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to end Delaware's 11-game win streak, 5-4, Wednesday afternoon in non-league baseball action at Raymond Spuhler Field.

Delaware (12-6) trailed 3-2 in the top of the ninth, but scored two runs to take the lead. Catcher John Schneider singled, Reid Gorecki walked, and Kris Dufner delivered a pinch-hit single to tie the game.

After a strikeout, Andrew Salvo hit a sacrifice fly to put the Blue Hens in front. Delaware had a chance to expand the lead after two George Mason errors, but Vince Vukovich hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

Adam Shorts singled off Delaware reliever Mike Pelcher to start the bottom of the ninth, and the next two batters reached on bunts to load the bases with nobody out. After Evan Howard was hit by a pitch to tie the game, Palumbo's fly ball to left field won it.

The Patriots (10-13) drew first blood in the second inning, scoring two runs off of Hens' starter Vic Sage. After a Bruce Baldwin RBI groundout scored a run, Howard doubled home Baldwin to put George Mason up 2-0.

Delaware came right back with two in the third, however. With one out, Casey Fahy walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Salvo. Peter Maestrales followed with a double to left field to score Salvo and tie the game at two.

Both starters settled down after that, and the game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. The Patriots loaded the bases with nobody out off of reliever Mike Mihalik on a walk and two singles, but the Hen freshman got out of the inning with only one run scored.

Sage allowed just five hits and two earned runs in six innings for Delaware, while Patriots starter Travis Hardman scattered four hits and gave up two earned runs in eight innings. Neither pitcher figured in the decision.

Delaware right fielder Chris Kolodzey finished 0-for-5 and had his 14-game hitting streak snapped.

The Blue Hens will open America East conference play Saturday by hosting Northeastern in a doubleheader at 12 noon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
