rightfielder Chris Kolodzey (East/Cherry Hill, NJ)
enjoyed a spectacular day, hitting two home runs in each
game and knocking in six runs to lead the University of
Delaware to an America East baseball doubleheader sweep over
host University of Hartford Saturday at McKenna
Field.
The Blue Hens, who will play two more
games at Hartford today (Sunday) to close out the regular
season, won the first game 17-5 and added a 5-1 win in the
nightcap to extend their win streak to seven
games.
Delaware (40-12, 21-5 America East)
clinched the top seed for next week's America East
Tournament to be held at Wilmington's Frawley Stadium May
17-19. Maine and Towson have also clinched spots in the
four-team field. The Blue Hens have now won the league
regular season title seven times in the last eight years and
have reached the 40-win total for the sixth time in the last
eight seasons. Hartford extended its losing streak to three
games and fell to 13-34, 9-17.
Kolodzey, who took over the team-lead in
home runs with 12, went 5 for 8 with five runs scored and
six RBI on the day. The Blue Hens hit eight home runs during
the doubleheader.
Delaware banged out 18 hits, including
eight extra base hits, in the 17-5 win in the opener.
Kolodzey, second baseman Andrew Salvo, centerfielder
Vince Vukovich, and designated hitter Casey
Fahy each collected three hits with Kolodzey hitting two
home runs and knocking in four runs. Third baseman Peter
Maestrales knocked in three runs and hit his ninth home
run of the season while Salvo, catcher John Schneider, and
shortstop Bobby Fry each knocked in two runs. Fry,
Fahy, and Steve Harden each hit home runs for the
Hens.
Designated hitter Keith Mirante had two
hits, including a home run, and collected three RBI to lead
Hartford. Delaware starter Rich McGuire went five innings to
pick up the win and improve to 9-3. Hartford's Jeff Swedberg
(1-5) took the loss, lasting just 3 1/3 innings.
The Blue Hens also took the nightcap,
scoring two runs each in the first and fourth innings to
pick up the 5-1 win. Kolodzey went 2 for 4 with two home
runs and two RBI. Shortstop Kris Dufner added two
hits, including a triple, while leftfielder Reid
Gorecki, Maestrales, and first baseman Teddy
Puitz also knocked in runs. Senior pitcher Vic
Sage earned the complete game victory, allowing four
hits and striking out four to improve to a 8-2. Jarrett
Stawarz (2-8) took the loss for Hartford.
