HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Second baseman
Andrew Salvo went 5-for-5 in the opener and Jason
Vincent pitched a five-hit shutout in the nightcap to
lead the University of Delaware baseball team to a
doubleheader sweep of Hofstra University, 11-3 and 9-0,
Saturday in Hempstead.
The wins put the Blue Hens (25-10) in
sole possession of first place in the conference with a 10-4
league mark, while Hofstra (15-18), which entered the day
tied for the top spot with Delaware, fell to 8-6 in the
America East.
Delaware jumped on Pride starter Nelson
Villalobos in the first game, scoring two unearned runs, and
added five more in the second. After Kris Dufner
walked, Steve Harden walked, and Reid Gorecki
singled to load the bases with nobody out, Salvo singled
home two runs with a base hit to right field. After a walk
and a Chris Kolodzey sacrifice fly, Vince
Vukovich reached on an error and John Schneider
doubled home two more runs for the Hens.
UD tacked on two runs in the third inning
to make the lead 9-0, which would prove to be more than
enough for starter Rich McGuire. The junior
righthander scattered 12 hits and allowed just three runs
while striking out five and walking nobody in picking up the
complete game win, his sixth victory of the
season.
The Hens, who have now won six straight
games, wasted no time in taking the lead in the nightcap,
again scoring two runs in the opening frame. With one out
Peter Maestrales, who hit a two-run home run in the
first game, singled and scored on a two-run roundtripper by
Kolodzey, his team-leading seventh homer of the
season.
Delaware scored two more runs in the
third on RBI doubles by Frank Fresconi and Schneider,
and put the game away in the fifth. With one out, Vukovich
doubled home Fresconi, and after Zachary Basch relieved
Hofstra starter Ryan Cosentino, Harden hit a two-run home
run. A Gorecki two-run single in the seventh finished the
scoring.
Vincent struck out seven and did not walk
a batter during his shutout, his sixth win of the year. The
sophomore righthander did not allow a Hofstra player to
reach third base.
Delaware and Hofstra will play another
twinbill Sunday at 11 a.m. in Hempstead.
