Blue Hens hit nine home runs to complete four-game sweep of Pride

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware baseball team hit nine home runs and scored in 10 of 14 innings Sunday in sweeping a doubleheader from Hofstra, 15-6 and 16-10, Sunday afternoon in Hempstead.

The two teams entered the weekend tied for first place in the America East, but the Blue Hens (27-10, 12-4) are now in sole possession of the top spot after defeating the Pride (15-20, 8-8) in four games this weekend.

In the opener, Delaware took the early lead in the second inning on a two-run home run by John Schneider, and added a run in the third on a leadoff homer by Reid Gorecki. Hofstra got one back in the fourth off of Blue Hen starter Vic Sage, but Delaware put the game away with a seven-run fifth inning.

Steve Harden led off the frame with a home run, and Kris Dufner, Gorecki, and Andrew Salvo followed with singles to load the bases. After an RBI single by Peter Maestrales, Chris Kolodzey hit a grand slam, his team-leading eighth homer of the season. Vince Vukovich added a run-scoring single in the inning to give the Hens a 10-1 lead in the fifth.

The Pride scored four runs in the sixth inning, including two on a home run by Danny Torres, to cut the lead to 10-6, but the Hens quickly responded with five in the seventh. Delaware had a runner on first with two outs, but Dufner singled and Casey Fahy walked to load the bases, and Salvo singled home two runs. Maestrales then followed with a three-run home run to conclude the scoring for Delaware. In all, seven Hens had two hits in the game.

UD started quickly in the nightcap, as Salvo, Maestrales, Kolodzey, and Frank Fresconi hit consecutive doubles to open the game. However, Hofstra answered with three in the bottom of the first to tie the game.

Delaware regained the lead in the third on a three-run home run by Gorecki, who entered the day with one round-tripper before tripling his total. Again the Pride came back against Delaware starter Mike Mihalik, scoring four in the bottom of the frame, three on a bases loaded double by Jerry Gambardella.

The teams each added a run in the fourth, and Delaware took the lead for good in the fifth. Salvo hit a sacrifice fly to score one run, and two others scored on an error and a passed ball.

The Hens, who batted .424 and scored 51 runs during the weekend, added five in the sixth for some breathing room. Teddy Puitz homered to lead off the inning, Maestrales doubled home two runs, and Fresconi hit a two-run home run. Bobby Fry ended the assault in the seventh with a pinch hit homer, his first of the season. Blue Hen reliever Brian Zeigler pitched two innings of hitless ball to pick up his third win of the season.

Delaware, winners of eight in a row, will return to action Tuesday when the Hens face Villanova in the Liberty Bell Classic semifinals. The teams will square off at 3 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
