NCAA Regionals • 2nd Round Kent State 12, Delaware 11 May 26, 2001 Golden Flashes Outslug Delaware; End Blue Hens' Season COLUMBUS, OH - Dave Mattle hit a bases loaded single off the glove of University of Delaware second baseman Andrew Salvo with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Kent State ended the season for the Blue Hens with a 12-11 slugfest victory at the NCAA Regionals Saturday evening at Ohio State's Bill Davis Stadium. Delaware, the No. 3 seed, defeated Ohio State 5-4 in the opening round Friday night but lost to top seed and No. 23 ranked Mississippi State 4-3 Saturday afternoon and followed with the loss to No. 4 seed Kent State (32-29) to end one of the finest seasons in UD history. Delaware, making its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, finish the season with a record of 45-15, tying a school record for wins in a season. Kent State, the Mid-American Conference champion, advances to the regional championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Mississippi State. Should Kent State win, a second game would follow 30 minutes later. The winner advances to the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend. "Tonight you saw two teams that were relentless and neither wanted to go home," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman, whose team was 12-6 in one-run games entering the day. "I tip my hat to my kids. We didn't hit as well as Kent State did tonight but my kids gave a great effort in this regional and throughout the entire season." The Blue Hens, who lost consecutive games for the first time since early May, had taken a 11-10 lead into the final inning but Brady Glass hit a solo home run off Delaware freshman reliever Mike Mihalik (5-3) to tie the score and the Golden Flashes proceeded to load the bases. Mihalik got Kent All-American first baseman John VanBenschoten to pop out to first with the bases loaded for the second out, but Mattle followed with the game-winner on a hot shot that just eluded Salvo. Delaware, which took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 6-5 in the fourth inning, took its final lead in the top of the ninth when the Hens scored two runs. Shortstop Kris Dufner hit an RBI double to score Vince Vukovich and Doug Eitelman knocked in another run on a base hit to right field. Dufner knocked in four runs and Maestrales and Teddy Puitz each hit home runs to lead the Blue Hens. VanBenschoten, the national leader with 32 home runs, was 3 for 5 and knocked in two runs and second baseman Chris Welsch collected four hits and knocked in three runs. Glass had three hits, scored three runs, and knocked in two others. Delaware sophomore starter Jason Vincent lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing 13 hits and nine runs. Kent State, which put up four runs in both the second and fifth innings, totalled 20 hits overall for the evening while the Blue Hens managed just nine. Kent State's Josh Mayle (4-1) picked up the win with five innings of relief.
