Delaware 9, Temple 8 (10 innings) April 26, 2001 Vukovich the Hero as Hens Win Liberty Bell Classic Tournament MVP Vince Vukovich Knocked in Five Runs vs. Temple PHILADELPHIA -- Tournament Most Valuable Player Vince Vukovich knocked in five runs, including the game-winner with a two-out single in the 10th inning, to lift the University of Delaware baseball squad to a 9-8 win over Temple to capture the 2001 Liberty Bell Classic title at Veteran’s Stadium Thursday night. Vukovich, who also sent the game into extra innings with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning, led the Blue Hens (30-10) to their 11th straight win of the season and their fifth Liberty Bell Classic title in the 10 years of the tournament. It was the Hens’ first tournament title since 1997. Delaware has now won 30 or more games for the eighth straight season. Temple (18-27), which fell to Delaware for the third time this season, twice by a single run, seemed to have the game in hand when the Owls scored three runs in the 10th inning off UD reliever Jason Vincent to take an 8-5 lead. But Delaware never gave up. Backup catcher Matt Wimer, who entered the game with just one hit in six at bats, connected on a two-out base hit to tie the game at 8-8 and Vukovich followed by hitting a single to left field to win the game. Nick Spiewak pitched one scoreless inning in relief of Vincent to earn the win and improve to 1-1 while Temple’s Greg Powell (4-6) suffered the loss. Delaware starter Brian Zeigler was impressive, allowing just five hits and two runs in eight innings before giving way to Vincent. Vukovich, the MVP of the 2000 America East Conference tournament that put the Hens into the NCAA Tournament, had a big night, going 3 for 4 with five runs batted in. He sent the game into extra innings in the ninth when his RBI single scored Chris Kolodzey who had singled. Temple had taken a 5-4 lead into the final inning thanks to a three-run ninth that was highlighted by a pinch-hit two-run triple by Keith Ramsey. Ramsey scored on an error on the hit by Delaware shortstop Kris Dufner to tie the game. Kolodzey went 3 for 5, had a double, a stolen base, and scored four runs, while leftfielder Casey Fahy and second baseman Andrew Salvo each collected two hits. Salvo, who scored the winning run on Vukovich’s hit, extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Temple leftfielder Chris Krusen collected two hits and knocked in two to lead the Owls attack, which featured 12 hits.
