Liberty Bell Classic 1st Round Delaware 14, Lehigh 3 April 17, 2001 Salvo Blasts Two Home Runs to Lead Blue Hens to Rout Andrew Salvo PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The University of Delaware opened play in the 10th annual Liberty Bell Classic with a strong offensive showing, belting out 18 hits and blasting three home runs on the way to a 14-3 win over Lehigh at Veteran's Stadium Tuesday. The Blue Hens (22-10) improved their all-time record to 21-5 in Liberty Bell Classic play and advanced to the semifinals April 24 vs. the winner of Tuesday night's Villanova vs. St. Joseph's game. Delaware has captured four of the nine previous Liberty Bell Classic titles, last winning the title in 1997. Drexel, Villanova, Pennsylvania, and LaSalle are also competing in the tournament, which showcases the top NCAA Division I programs in the Delaware Valley. Senior second baseman Andrew Salvo, the 2000 America East Player of the Year, hit a home run into the right field bullpen on the first pitch of the game off Lehigh starter Keith Frerichs (2-2) and added another solo shot in the second inning to the same spot to get the Blue Hens started. Delaware scored four runs in the first, three in the second, and five more in the fourth to jump out to a 12-2 lead. Salvo is now tied for the team lead with six home runs this season. Every Delaware starter had at least one hit as Salvo was 2 for 6 with two runs batted in, outfielder rightfielder Chris Kolodzey went 3 for 5 and raised his batting average to a league-leading .418, first baseman Doug Eitelman was 2 for 3 with a double, triple, and three RBI, catcher John Schneider went 2 for 2 and knocked in two runs, and centerfielder Reid Gorecki hit two doubles. First baseman Teddy Puitz added a mammoth home run in the eighth that reached the 500 level in left field. Lehigh, which lost its third game in its last four outings, fell to 11-19 on the season. The Mountain Hawks collected just five hits on the day with Matt Yarnold leading the way with a two-run double in the third inning. Delaware sophomore lefthander Brian Zeigler picked up the win in his second start of the season, allowing five hits and three runs in six innings while walking three and striking out seven batters. He improved to 2-0 on the season. Nick Spiewak and Jason Vincent closed out the win on the mound with three hitless innings of relief. The game marked the first meeting between former East Coast Conference foes Delaware and Lehigh since 1991. The Hens have now won four in a row and 12 of the last 14 over the Mountain Hawks.
