Delaware 7, Maine 5 (8) Delaware 10, Maine 3 April 15, 2001 Pelcher Pitches Out of Jam in 7th and Kolodzey Homers in 8th to Spark Sweep Mike Pelcher Chris Kolodzey SMITHFIELD, RI -- Mike Pelcher pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the seventh and Chris Kolodzey hit a two-run homer to center in the top of the eighth to spark University of Delaware to a key doubleheader sweep over University of Maine, 7-5 and 10-3, in America East baseball action Sunday afternoon. With Delaware's sweep one day after Maine had swept a pair from the Blue Hens, Delaware moved into a first place tie with Hofstra at 8-4. Maine and Towson follow close behind at 7-5. The Pride and Tigers split their four-game set over the weekend with each team sweeping a doubleheader. In the opener, Delaware (21-10) rallied to take a 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. Frank Fresconi's RBI double tied the score with one out and Kris Dufner's single with two outs scored Fresconi with the go-ahead run. Fresconi finished the twinbill 6-for-9. But Maine (20-8) would not go away quietly. Mike Livulpi opened the inning with a double to left center. Aaron Young followed immediately with an RBI single to center to tie the game. The Black Bears had a chance to win it in the seventh. Jon Hambleton singled to right to put runners at first and third. Joe Drapeau, who hit three homers in a game on Saturday against Delaware, was intentionally walked to load the bases before the Blue Hens called on reliever Mike Pelcher. Pelcher coaxed Alain Picard and Mike Ross into fielder's choices grounder to second that forced Young and Hambleton, respectively, at home for the first two outs of the inning. Pelcher then got Jesse Carlton on a fly ball to right to end the threat. In the eighth, though, Delaware put the game away as Peter Maestrales (5-for8 in the two games) led off with a single to right. Kolodzey followed with his team-leading sixth homer of the season, a two-run blast to center field, to give the Blue Hens the lead and make a winner out of Pelcher (3-2). In the nightcap, Delaware jumped out quickly with four runs in the top of the first to give Mike Mahalik all the support he would need (2-1). Andrew Salvo led off with a single and scored when Maestrales' single to center was misplayed, allowing Maestrales to move up to second. Kolodzey grounded to short, on which Maestrales moved to third, for the first out of the inning. But Vince Vuckovich, who had three RBI in the second game, followed with single to center to score Maestrales. Vukovich later scored on an RBI single by Fresconi to make it 3-0. Fresconi then came around on an RBI single by Kris Dufner. The Blue Hens would extend the lead with two runs each in the third and fifth innings before Maine got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. However, Mahalik's decision was never threatened. He scattered six hits and two walks while striking out three in the complete game effort.
