Game One: Delaware 3, Northeastern 2 Game Two: Delaware 12, Northeastern 2 March 31, 2001 Blue Hens Open Conference Season With Two Wins Reid Gorecki's home run won the opener for Delaware NEWARK, DE -- Reid Gorecki hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the opener and the Blue Hens scored in five of six frames in the nightcap as the University of Delaware baseball team swept a doubleheader from Northeastern, 3-2 and 12-2, Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Hens and Huskies were locked in a pitchers' duel in the first game, and Delaware (12-6, 2-0 America East) trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Steve Harden homered to tie the game. The Hens took the lead in the sixth on Andrew Salvo's solo homor, but Northeastern (2-10, 0-2) tied the game at two in the seventh on a two-out pinch hit single by Brad Czarnowski. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Gorecki hit his first home run of the season over the left field fence to win it for Delaware. Rich McGuire scattered six hits and allowed only one earned run to get the win, while Chris Walsh was the hard-luck loser, giving up seven hits and three runs while going the distance. In the second game, Northeastern struck first again in the opening frame on an RBI single by Coley O'Donnell, but the Hens answered right back. Peter Maestrales doubled home Casey Fahy, and then scored on a single by Chris Kolodzey to put Delaware up 2-1. Delaware got one in the second on an RBI single by Fahy, and scored two in the third, one coming on a solo home run by Maestrales, who finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. The Huskies got one back in the top of the fourth on a home run by Hernan Guerrero, but Delaware put the game away with four in the bottom of the inning. Kolodzey, Vince Vukovich, and John Schneider all had run-scoring singles in the frame. The Hens got three in the bottom of the sixth to finish the scoring. Delaware starter Jason Vincent improved to 5-0 by allowing two runs and seven hits in five innings, while reliever Nick Spiewak gave up just two hits in two scoreless innings. Northeastern starter Ken Henry was rocked for nine runs and 12 hits in four innings and took the loss. Delaware has now won all 11 home games this season and 13 straight in Newark. Northeastern has dropped nine in a row.
