Dufner's RBI single
in 10th Gives Hens First NCAA Win Since
1992
COLUMBUS, OH - Sophomore shortstop
Kris Dufner delivered an RBI single with two outs in
the top of the 10th inning for the winning run as the
University of Delaware upended host and No. 2 seed Ohio
State 5-4 in an NCAA baseball regional first round game
Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium.
Dufner's run-scoring single made a winner
of senior Vic Sage (11-2) , who relieved starter
Rich McGuire with two outs in the ninth inning and
then held the Buckeyes without a run in the 10th inning for
the win. Ohio State pinch-hitter Lance Rolston hit a long
drive to the warning track in right field with one runner on
but Delaware's Chris Kolodzey gathered it in to end
the game.
Delaware, making its fourth straight NCAA
Tournament appearance, snapped a nine-game losing streak in
NCAA Tournament play with its first victory since downing
UMBC 6-5 in 10 innings in 1992 in Miami. The Hens, who have
now won 12 of their last 13 games, improved to 45-13, tying
a school record for wins in a season. Ohio State, the Big 10
regular season champion, fell to 43-17.
The Blue Hens advance to the winners
bracket game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. where they will take on
top seed and No. 23 ranked Mississippi State (37-22) which
advanced with an 9-8 first round win in 10 innings over Kent
State. Kent State (30-29) will take on Ohio State in the
elimination game at 12 noon. Another elimination game will
cap the day at 7 p.m. The finals are set for Sunday at 12
noon. MSU won on a 10th inning RBI single by Enrico
Jones.

"This is a tremendous win for our
program," said first-year Delaware head coach Jim
Sherman. "We got some key hits at big times tonight and
I can't say enough about the great pitching efforts we got
from Rich and Vic."
Ohio State opened the scoring with two
runs in the second on a sacrifice fly by John Mayor and an
RBI single by catcher Joe Wilkins but the Hens came back to
tie the score with two runs of their own in the third as
second baseman Andrew Salvo delivered a two-run
double.
The Hens went up 3-2 in the fifth on an
RBI single by Reid Gorecki but the Buckeyes came back
with two more in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3
lead. Nick Swisher hit a two-out single that scored two runs
for OSU.
Delaware, which is now 6-1 in extra
inning games this season, tied the game with a run in the
eighth on an infield hit by Kolodzey scored
Salvo.
The Hens got the game-winner in the 10th
as Kolodzey singled, moved to second on a throwing error by
Ohio State reliever Brandon Steen (4-4), and advanced to
third when pinch-hitter Doug Eitelman grounded out.
Eitelman had pinch hit for UD catcher John Schneider
who suffered a possible broken index finger on his right
hand during his at bat. Dufner then hit the game-winner to
rightfield off Cory Cox.
Sage, Delaware's all-time leader in
pitching appearances with 71, put the Buckeyes down in the
10th. Doug Dendinger led off with a walk and moved to second
on balk after Swisher flew out to leftfield. Sage then
struck out Doug Deeds looking, bringing up Rolston. Rolston
lifted a deep fly to right field, but Kolodzey made the
running catch on the warning track to end the
game.
McGuire went 8 2/3 innings for Delaware,
allowing five hits, four runs, and walking seven with three
strikeouts. Ohio State starter E.J. Laratta lasted 7 1/3
innings before giving way to Steen with one out in the
eighth inning.
