Game One: Delaware 9, Penn State 5 Game Two: Suspended after 6 innings March 17, 2001 Middle of Lineup Stars for Blue Hens Peter Maestrales Had Two RBI and Two Extra Base Hits NEWARK, DE -- The heart of the University of Delaware lineup was all the Blue Hens needed Saturday as Andrew Salvo, Peter Maestrales, and Chris Kolodzey each knocked in two runs to pace a 9-5 non-league baseball victory over Penn State Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended at the end of the sixth inning with Delaware leading 15-6. The game will be resumed Sunday at 11 a.m. with the regularly scheduled single game to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The Hens (7-5) won their sixth straight game as they banged out eight hits on the day, scoring two runs in the first inning, four in the second, and three in the fourth in the seven-inning game. Penn State, a 2000 NCAA Super Regional finalist, had a three-game win streak snapped to fall to 6-12. The game was the first between the two schools since 1977 and the Hens downed the Nittany Lions for the first time since 1976. Rich McGuire picked up the complete game victory for the Hens, scattering eight hits and striking out seven in seven innings to improve to 3-1. Penn State starter Justin Nash (1-2) lasted just one and one-third inning, allowing six runs, four earned. Maestrales, a senior third baseman, went 2 for 4, scored two runs, knocked in two, and had a double and triple while senior second baseman Salvo was 1 for 4 with two RBI and senior outfielder Chris Kolodzey was 3 for 4 with two RBI. Penn State collected eight hits and was led by first baseman Donnie Wright who was 3 for 3 and knocked in two runs, hitting solo home runs in the third inning and the fifth inning. Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Salvo had an RBI single and a Penn State error led to a second run. Penn State answered with three runs in the second on a two-run single by outfielder Rod Perry and a groundout RBI by third baseman Adam Warchal. But the Hens came back with four runs in the second to take the lead for good as Salvo knocked in a run on a groundout, Maestrales knocked in two with a double to left field, and Kolodzey singled home a run.
