NEWARK, DE -- Second baseman Andrew
Salvo went 4-for-5 and starting pitcher Mike
Pelcher allowed two runs in five innings to lead the
University of Delaware baseball team to a 10-3 victory over
Villanova Wednesday at Richie Ashburn Field in
Philadelphia.
After falling behind 1-0, Delaware
(23-10) jumped on Wildcat starter John Yeager for four runs
in the second inning. With one out, Frank Fresconi
singled, Kris Dufner singled, and both scored on a
double by Steve Harden. Reid Gorecki then
singled home Harden and scored on a single by Salvo to put
the Hens in front 4-1.
Villanova (18-18-1) got a run back in the
fifth on an RBI double by Dan Rohan, but Delaware put the
game away with six runs in the eighth. Wildcat pitcher Jason
Petre entered the game to start the inning, and did not
retire a batter. Vince Vukovich led off the inning
with a single, and John Schneider, Fresconi, Dufner,
Harden, and Gorecki all followed with singles.
Nick Spiewak, Mike Mihalik,
Vic Sage, and Rich McGuire combined to allow
one run on four hits in four innings of relief work to make
the lead stand up.
The Blue Hens, which pounded out 15 hits
including three by Fresconi and two each by Dufner, Harden,
and Gorecki, have now won four straight and will face the
Wildcats again Tuesday at Veterans Stadium in the Liberty
Bell Classic Semifinals.
Delaware will return to conference action
Saturday when the Hens travel to Hempstead, NY, for a
crucial four-game set with Hofstra. The Hens and Pride, both
tied for first in the America East with 8-4 conference
records, will play the first of two doubleheaders Saturday
at 1 p.m.
