Delaware 16, Rider 12 May 9, 2001 Peter Maestrales Hit a Clutch Two-Run Homer and Scored Five Runs in the Comeback Vince Vukovich went 3-for-6 with a three-run double in the ninth LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Andrew Salvo and Vince Vukovich each had three hits as the University of Delaware baseball team rallied for a 16-12 comeback win over Rider Wednesday at Richard F. Daly Field. The Blue Hens (38-12) scored four runs in the top of the first and led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the third, but the Broncs (24-23) stormed back to take a 12-9 lead into the top of the eighth. Delaware got two runs back in the eighth on a two-run home run by Peter Maestrales to cut the lead to 12-11, and then exploded in the ninth off Rider closer Tim Superka. Doug Eitelman delivered a pinch-hit single with one out, and after a wild pitch and a strikeout, Salvo was intentionally walked. Reid Gorecki then doubled down the rightfield line to tie the game, and after an intentional walk to Maestrales, Chris Kolodzey reached on an error by Rider shortstop Casey Long to put the Hens up 13-12. Vukovich then cleared the bases with a three-run double to put Delaware up four. Vic Sage, who pitched two shutout innings in relief, then retired the Broncs in order in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his eighth win of the season. Maestrales and Kolodzey each knocked in runs in the first before Vukovich tripled home Maestrales and scored on a double by Kris Dufner. Rider got one back in the bottom of the inning, but the Hens responded with two in the third. Maestrales, who scored five runs in the game, led off the inning by reaching on an error. After a double by Kolodzey, Vukovich scored Maestrales with a groundout and John Schneider singled home Kolodzey. Rider answered right back in the third, as the first seven Broncs hitters reached base before Delaware starter Brian Zeigler was replaced by Nick Spiewak. The big blow in the inning, which was aided by three Blue Hen errors, was a bases-loaded triple by Kyle Helbig. The Hens got the lead right back in the fourth, as Gorecki reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Kolodzey, and stole home. Schneider then doubled home Kolodzey to put Delaware up 8-7. Rider regained the lead in the fifth by scoring three runs with two outs, as Scott Rich delivered a two-run single. Maestrales scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to cut the lead to one, but Rider scored two more in the bottom of the inning to go up 12-9. All 10 Delaware batters recorded hits in the game, which featured a combined nine errors. Just 17 of the 28 runs scored were earned. The Blue Hens conclude their regular season this weekend with a four-game series at Hartford.
