Rutgers 5, Delaware 2 May 1, 2001 Blue Hens Can't Recover from Early Deficit Reid Gorecki PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Rutgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and held the Delaware offense in check most of the afternoon as the Scarlet Knights defeated the Blue Hens, 5-2, in baseball action Tuesday afternoon. Rutgers, 36-13, scored a single run in the first and four more in the second off of starter Brian Zeigler (3-1). After allowing six hits in the first two innings, Ziegler settled down to allow just one hit over the next four innings. However, Delaware (33-12) couldn't get its high-octane offense in gear. The Blue Hens outhit Rutgers, 10-9, but did not manage an extra-base hit on the afternoon. Reid Gorecki and Vince Vukovich each had two hits for Delaware. The Blue Hens got on the board in the seventh against starter Tom Crohan (6-1). John Schneider opened the inning by reaching on an error. Vukovich followed with a single through the right side. After Kris Dufner fouled out, Steve Harden singled to left to load the bases and chase Crohan. After reliever Ryan Molchan got Teddy Puitz to pop out for the second out of the inning, Gorecki singled to left to score Schneider. Andrew Salvo got Delaware to within three by drawing a bases loaded walk, which resulted in the end of Molchan's outing. However, reliever Eric Brown came in an got Peter Maestrales to ground out and end the threat. The Blue Hens had two on with one out in the eighth and the ninth against Brown, but could not score. With runners at first and second in the eighth, Dufner struck out and pinch-hitter Doug Eitelman flew out to left field to end the threat. In the ninth, after pinch-hitter Casey Fahy had singled and Salvo walked, Maestrales flied out to left-center and Chris Kolodzey was called out on strikes to end the ball game. With the effort, Brown recorded his eighth save of the season for Rutgers. Delaware will return to action Saturday when it opens a four-game set with America East-rival Drexel.
