Sage Throws Two-Hitter As Hens Win Ninth Straight

Vic Sage Allowed Just Two Hits and One Unearned Run For the Win

PHILADELPHIA -- Senior righthander Vic Sage threw a two-hitter and allowed only one unearned run and Andrew Salvo went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases as the Delaware baseball team won its ninth straight game with a 7-1 win over Temple Tuesday afternoon at Erny Field.

Delaware trailed 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning, but Peter Maestrales hit a two-out, two-run double, knocking in Casey Fahy and Reid Gorecki, to put the Blue Hens (10-5) in front.

Delaware then blew the game open in the ninth by scoring five runs. Salvo, Chris Kolodzey, and Kris Dufner had RBI singles for the Hens, who were aided by two Temple errors in the ninth. Only two of Delaware's seven runs were earned.

Those runs would prove to be more than enough for Sage, who hurled one of the best games of his career. The game started ominously for Sage, as Bob Filler walked to start the first and Jim Tully reached on an error by Dufner. However, Sage retired the next three batters to allow only an unearned run, and gave up just one more hit and one walk the rest of the way.

Fahy went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Delaware, while Kolodzey finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, and Dufner went 2-for-4.

Temple starter Greg Powell was the hard-luck loser for Temple (1-15), allowing just two unearned runs on five hits in 6.1 innings. Sage, who retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced, improved to 1-2 on the season.

Delaware returns to action Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium when the Hens host Princeton in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
